Another email account had a notification that I'd won a South African lottery prize - that's very kind of them! It had been put into the spam folder for some reason

The Council will be resurfacing the road on Monday so I have outside a digger and workmen with pneumatic drills, I hope they will be finished by midday as I have a Tesco delivery booked (store cupboard stock-up)
In my emails today I have one from Amazon saying they are now doing Super Saver Delivery on orders of £5 instead of their usual £15 which is good news.

That is good news. I've been trying to work out if I can fit my life into six 28-hour days per week rather than the usual seven 24-hour days. Unfortunately my timetable doesn't permit this which is a shame.

There's a downside to paperless billing, I've just looked at my emails and the only 2 new ones are links to my phone and electicity bills Join freecycle, Andy, you'll be inundated with emails deluding you into thinking you have loads of friends!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Sorry to start Sunday with a rant, but......
I usually watch Andrew Marr's programme on Sunday morning's. It happens to be Sophie Raworth today, but that makes no difference to my rant. Thay have just said that Katherine Jenkins has signed the biggest ever record deal in "classical music". This was accompanied by film of said person crooning in a wobbly manner into a microphone. I object to this appalling dumbing down. It is nothing to do with real music as we know it. I don't mind (really) people liking this stuff. I just object to the label.

I agree, Mary. It's the same when they describe her as an opera singer. Surely, to 'qualify' as an opera singer, you have to sing in...well...operas?

Back to our discussions of names.
At church today three children in one family were being christened and their names were Daisy Olive, Zachary Victor and Theodore Alexander (referred to other than at the font as Theo). The white professional parents were Ashley and Victoria.
They all sound a bit Victorian to my ears, except for the father called Ashley. The only other man called Ashley I am aware of is the Chelsea footballer, Ashley Cole, the ups and spectacular downs of whose marriage to Cheryl Tweedy frequently make the front page of the tabloids. The wedding looked lovely in OK! magazine.

Ashley Mallett, Australian test cricketer in the 1960s. Spin bowler. Now who would have expected a post referring to him on r3ok ?

At church today three children in one family were being christened and their names were Daisy Olive, Zachary Victor and Theodore Alexander (referred to other than at the font as Theo). What sort of ages were they, DB? Not triplets, I presume? Another Zachary There's no hope. Though when son and daughter-in-law were here (they've gone back to London now) they didn't really seem to have decided on anything very definitely. D-in-law says she is going to wait until the baby's born, to see what it looks like. The topic of names was officially banned, but we talked about them all the time anyway I'm just amazed they don't want to know the sex of the baby - I do! Son seems quite nervous at the prospect of fatherhood, d-i-l will be fine.

Zachary was about two, and Daisy and Theo babes in arms, presumably twins.
It happens quite often now. Parents begin to get into churchgoing (I hope not solely to get in a church school) and then when the second baby comes along they decide to have both baptized. Zachary was held in his father's arms, but there was the option for him to lean over the font, standing on a stool.

Theo is a nice name and Victor is very unusual.
I have a grump. My eldest brother is unwell. Since spending some time in South America on returning to the UK he has had kidney problems which any amount of tests cannot pinpoint the cause and he also needs another operation on his heart.
His ex is now bringing pressure on me to try and get them back together because she tells me that without her care he will not survive. I am worried enough about him without this. What am I supposed to do? They remain friends but he tells me he does not love her or want to be with her and she knows this, I am mightily upset about her trying to manipulate me emotionally. Also I have been trying to ring him this weekend but getting no answer, he last emailed me on the 14th. I am sure he is fine but he is over 200 miles away.

I know a Theo - he's about 35. Victor was quite usual in my father's generation. I've just looked it up in one of my name books and it seems, indeed, to gave been at its peak on the first 35 years of the last century.
That's a difficult problem with your brother, Anty. I don't think you can do anything about bringing them back together if he doesn't want it, but I can see how difficult it is for you when you are already upset to have a further cause of stress. Do I take it she didn't want to split from him?
When I can't get in touch with someone I usually think that no news is good news. You'd hear if something was wrong.

Ashley Wilkes, the staunch son of a plantation landowner in Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone With The Wind' and, later, a confederate soldier during the American Civil War; loved to talk about honour and tradition. Also the soggy Ashley in 'Coronation Street' but I don't want to lower the tone of this discussion!

Mary, thanks for your reply. He instigated the split, I am not getting involved with her manipulations.
I have now emailed my brother rather than trying to phone him again. As you say, no news is good news. Prior to his last trip to Peru and S. America he also did the old Drippy Hippy Silk Route for 3 months, so I have (on suggestion of a member here) asked him if he should contact Hospital of Tropical Diseases in case it is parasitic infection with his kidneys.
