"Twenty-three and a quarter minutes past" I wonder how my grandma would have said that (she said "five and twenty past" for 4.25 etc.). "Three and twenty and a quarter minutes past"? "Three-and-a-quarter and twenty minutes past"? "Oh-nine-twenty-three-point-two-five"

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

I'd asked for the bagless delivery, feeling virtuous, but when I saw the poor man struggling up the drive (which is long-ish) with trays of stuff I felt a bit bad. Bags are much easier for them.
I only did the bagless delivery once. It took me ages to unpack the trays to bring the stuff in. I piled it all in the porch to put away later. Bags are much easier for me too! That may be why they're running late - bagless deliveries. Our supermarkets up here have banned plastic bags and quite right too, but I always give the Tesco ones back for recycling - those I don't use for cleaning up after the dog when we're out. I hope they provide dog-owners with a substitute for that purpose in due time. Something biodegradable. I always carry the longlife bags and cotton shopping bags when I'm out now. I received a horrendous email only yesterday showing pictures of wildlife that had come to a horrible end due to plastic bags. Some had even travelled up to the Poles.

Not just to the poles: the Pacific Ocean is home to vast areas of floating plastic rubbish, most of which has come from land: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/the-worlds-rubbish-dump-a-garbage-tip-that-stretches-from-hawaii-to-japan-778016.html

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Aren't a lot of us humans so irresponsibly stupid and inane about the health of this wonderful planet of ours.

I've been using the Sainsbury's home delivery service - not for myself but for my mother. They offer 1 hour slots and they were actually early last time, they rang her and asked if they could deliver before the start of the slot. She rings her order through to me and I set it up for her online, very useful.

I've just had my British Gas statement. My monthly payments are going by £71 from the 17th November! That's one hell of a payment rise. I just rang them and the rather supercilious guy on the phone instructed me to get a pen and paper so he could "take me through it". The upshot was of course that gas has gone up by more than 35%. I said that I would now shop around for cheaper options and he just said "Well that's your prerogative." Nice.

My British Gas prices are fixed, till next April, I think, but I use a huge amount of gas because my house is badly insulated and hard to heat. I'm old enough to get the annual £200, but it doesn't cover much of my winter bills.
All gas companies will eventually raise their charges, so there's not a lot of point in changing. If anyone had a cheaper option really worth bothering about, BG would have no customers left.

It is worth changing. I've just done it through Uswitch and fixed my rate until October 2009. I shall save £30 per month. I don't know why British Gas have any customers left with their attitude.

We're still trying to figure out how the electricity bill has nearly doubled over the last two years. I think some of it may be related to the troglodytes in the basement who leave everything running even if they aren't home, and of course CFL's don't use any electricity, do they? They should be moving to the trailer that Grandma vacated recently (moved in with Son-in-law's family) and hopefully we will see a difference then.

British Gas will fix until 2012, according to their website. I haven't really looked into the details yet - probably doesn't apply to me, because mine are already fixed for the moment. It is all such an irritating way to spend one's time.

Oh dear. This is sounding as though it's about time for a BG bill to come thudding through my letterbox I had my prices capped a couple of years ago until 2010, although it seems to have made no noticeable difference. I checked out other suppliers via an independent advisory organisation and was told that BG is the 'cheapest supplier for your area' Guess it's going to be thermal socks and several layers of sweaters. Again.

Mort, my payments weren't capped. £71.00 per month is a big rise. If yours are capped your payments won't be any different to normal.

Yes Milly. £71 is an outrageous monthly increase! All I meant was that although my prices had been 'capped', the bills just kept going up even though I only switched the heating on in one room last Winter and this Summer's bills are higher than previously, even though the heating isn't on
