I had the appointment at the dentist but with the goverment's ruling on what dentist's can do, I had to have another appointment somewhere else, under GA, as, like another time before, my dentist wasn't able to yank it out as the root is quite firmly rooted, for want of a better word. Whilst writing this, though since taking salt water the pain seems to have easedd up rather.

Ooh! Ow! Strangely fascinating too...
I actually do find teeth really interesting. They seem to be so important to our sense of well-being.
Is your GA appointment soon?

Having worked in a dental clinic for several years, I take the view that as the front line of the digestive system, teeth are actually very important (not that mine are anything to write home about after years of neglect). I'm also mildly interested in the aesthetic importance of good teeth; it seems you can't get a decent job over here without a nice smile.

You might check with a chemist, I have a vague recollection that applying calcium hydroxide to the area sometimes helps (neutralizes bacterial acid which causes a lot of pain)

I probably shoudn't do this, but oh well.

My Mum had a stroke last night. She had her 80th birthday on the 5th. We are close, such that close seems ... inadequate beyond inadequacy.

She's got good mobility and knows what she wants to say, I think - but it all comes out scrambled. I suppose the good thing is it's early, and perhaps the words will come back.

With my Gran (and they were poor, very poor. No money) she brought up her sister's son, my cousin. I 'phoned him half an hour ago & he was "rushing for a train, keep me posted." I'll never speak to him again.

Mum's weird at the moment - she knows what she wants to say, I'm sure, but it comes out like a translation machine.

Sorry for this. Spent 6 hours in Kingston A&E, which is  Sad

Nothing to be sorry about! Of course that is what this thread is for.

I wish you and your mother the very best, stay as close to her as you can manage to, these are times when she will surely get quite impatient with herself so you have to be patient for both of you together.

I will keep my fingers crossed for her full recovery. My inclination with the cousin would be to indeed give him another call, even if you find it repellent to do so right now. Not for his sake, however -- for your mother's. I find his behavior very infuriating, but perhaps he didn't quite understand the gravity of what you were telling him? Anyway, please ignore what I say if it seems inappropriate. You are the best judge.

SH.
Don't know what to add to Turfer's post, except to say that I too will have my fingers crossed.

Oh, how I sympathise. There are not many things more difficult than seeing someone you love alter in a moment. Or apparently alter, because she is of course still the same except for this physical thing. It happened to my mother, too, and your post brought the memories back strongly. She suddenly started saying "she" instead of "he" when referring to my sons, for instance - it just came out wrong. Her speech did improve, though it never got back to total normality. Like your mother, it didn't make much difference to her mobility, which is something.

You will be exhausted at the moment, mentally and physically. Be kind to yourself, and (I agree here with Turfan Fragnent) try to give your cousin one more chance, if you can bear to.

Big sympathies, SH. My mother had one when she was 80 (three years ago). I watched her fall down the stairs as if it was in slow-motion. It was a relatively minor one, and her speech improved VERY quickly, although she still has major mobility problems. The most important thing (for her, she said) was being able to communicate and to *read*. I really hope your mum recovers well...
