I am so grumped!! Patrick Jones, poet & playwright, was due to give readings of his new book at Waterstones.
After the last 24 hours of non-stop emailing from the right-wing Christian Lobby "Christian Voice" threatening Waterstones with in-store disruption they suddenly cancelled it. Patrick Jones however turned up and did it in the street.
This has made me so cross. Christian Voice are anti Islamic, anti gay, anti Obama. Their website has an article accusing the Scout Movement of grooming children for sex. Their Leader was arrested and locked up for 4 hours by the Minority Interests Police for handing out leaflets at the Cardiff Mardi-Gras telling homosexuals how they could be saved and trying to preach at them.
Patrick Jones is anti religion (ALL religion, not just Christian) and anti war. His stuff can be very dark and disturbing but what has got to me is that Waterstones dug their heels in over The Satanic Verses but have caved in after one burst of sustained emailing by the worst type of fundamentalist Christian (who look foward to the coming again of a John Knox or a John Wesley to lead Britain out of its state of sin). <fume emoticom>

I forgive you, tinners. I take the laptop to bed with me sometimes, too . I should think that's quite nice and warm - a hot water bottle for the 21st Century.

I'm shocked. I don't know what to say.
Yes, it's by the drip, drip, drip of little pieces of information that we build a complete picture, is not it? I give you... MARY!

I'm surprised I don't get more back trouble, considering how much slouching I do (like now, on sofa with laptop).

Re my #8535 about Patrick Jones. I am not so grumped now having heard the radio interview between Stephen Green (Christian Voice) and Patrick Jones. In the interview Green came across as a total bigot and fascist. He quoted one poem about "teenage girls being stoned to death" and said "we don't want this filth and depravity in bookshops coming up to Christmas" and the poem which said (from memory) "I pray the mosques be closed and the churches turned into poundshops and the barriers may then come down" to which he said "that is total blasphemy about the churches and as for the barriers coming down, he is obviously advocating mass immigration"
Well, I am afraid that interview did not do him much good and if it were not so sad it would be funny.
Anyway, all this is probably of no interest to anyone outside of Wales, but I did get a reply from Waterstones Cardiff which said "Regarding the cancellation of the event arranged for this book, Waterstone's simply took steps to prevent a disorderly event in the interests of our customers and staff."
The worrying thing about Stephen Green is that he now wants to destroy any works of art he thinks in his opinion are blasphemous and even more worrying is a bunch of crackpots having such power over a major retailer.
The whole thing gives Christians such a bad image.
Grump over.

There are precedents for that. I agree, Anty, very alarming.

I find it very dispiriting Mary. He is a Marxist (or maybe an Anarchist) I dunno. His brother is Nicky Wire of course of the Manics. I met Nicky Wire once! This is part of a poem which has been deemed as blasphemy. religion the new race followers are easy to replace so belong or be gone as blindfolded women with stapledshut eyes are paraded through villages to lie beneath stones and rucksacks scream the word of god place the veil, the hood, the orange boiler suit to mark your ground and plead for enemies and infidels and poppies flower in spilledblood sommed silence as taleban lords harvest opium crops to numb the masses like bloodless crucifixion upon wooden crosses and bush declares god is on our side and blair expects significant.....................losses Nothing has enraged me for so long as Waterstones' cowardice. I will certainly boycott them from now on. Anyway, this is getting a bit serious.

I like this bit. Quite a lot actually. The whole thing gives Christians such a bad image.
Oh yes. Don't get me started. I have a couple of grumps: The first is that my internet has been playing up over the last few days. From day to day I can't predict which websites will allow me on, or whether I'll be able to access my email servers. Just now I tried to look see the prices of various Lawes discs on the river people's site, but couldn't get on... Second grump is that I ordered a load of stationery from a well known stationer online. For some reason beyond which I cannot fathom, one has to register as a business in order to order online. This is not made clear, but now I have a business account with them. Registered to the wrong address (their confirmation email had the correct address, but for some reason I got an invoice which was clearly wrong). With a delivery estimate of 30/12/08, despite the fact that I believe that they promised me next day delivery... I ordered all of these LAST WEEK... What's so difficult about shipping some A4 document wallets, some A3 wallets and an A1 plastic clip frame? By the 30th December, I really hope I will have moved...

What I also find worrying is that if he was threatening in store disruption, why they couldn't get the police involved. Plus they have a right to keep him out of the shop, surely? It does seem a rather over the top reaction doesn't it? In addition, the media does seem drawn to lunatics these days, which can't be good as it must give them the idea that they have some credibility. Take all the deluded idiots that audition for all those things like pop idol and the X factor - the camera crew just love interviewing the least self aware in the whole crowd and then watching them like vultures as they're told hell will freeze over before they can sing a decent note - what sort of effect must this media attention have on them? It's an entirely different situation of course, Stephen Green is rather sinister, but if they'd all just ignore him maybe he'd realise nobody was listening and go away. Or ideally have him sectioned.
