Ho!  My wife wore contact lenses for many years.  About five years ago she was told that she had to switch to glasses as the "contacts" were starting to damage the cornea.  I think this problem occurs in middle to later life and after quite a long period of "contact" use.
Cheers
Depends on the contact lens type, S'wave. The old rigid lenses allowed no oxygen to get to the cornea, thereby causing severe problems after years of use. I lost one of mine after several years when I was on tour in the nineties and when I went for a replacement was warned by the practitioner (who quite by chance specialised in this problem) that since I'd had the old type for so long there was a strong possibility that my sight might be irreparably damaged: I was forbidden lenses completely and over the next three weeks my prescription for glasses changed twice, as the corneas reshaped themselves. Fortunately the show I was in at the time was set in the present day, and I had prop specs for two of my three characters anyway, so I wasn't working blind. After a month my eyes were examined again, and I was told in no uncertain terms how lucky I had been to have lost the old lens in time, and that since there were no lasting signs of damage, gas permeables (which are designed to allow constant air supply) would be permissable.

Ron/S`wave, I had a similar problem a few years ago. I had been wearing my lenses for too long during the day and, effectively, suffocated my eyes. This results in the capillaries becoming visible on the cornea and potential lasting damage to the eye. I stopped wearing contacts alrogether and after several months the problem was resolved. By that time I had got used to specs and didn`t bother with contacts. Of course now there is such a wide range of contacts available I may just get tempted tomorrow......

Blunder, blunder, bump, CRASH!! Oops, sorry!  That`s the sound of me road testing my new eyes. Actually it`s not as bad as that, just a little strange. They gave me 3 pairs of contacts to try out, I`d forgotten what it`s like to see without ocular apparatus perched over your nose! I will get some specs as well but these were the best emergency solution. I appear to have now entered the world of varifocals. Sigh. The optician said `you may take a few weeks to get used to them`. A FEW WEEKS!!  Are there any varifocal wearers out there with some tips for me? Anyone who mentions dogs or white sticks will be in d-e-e-p trouble Grin Grin

Mort, that's exactly what happened to me. I'd just forgotten all the technical words like 'capillaries', 'becoming visible', 'cornea' ... er, 'lenses' - I remembered that one.

I wear varifocals, and have never had any problems at all, so don't assume you will. I think some people find looking up/down in quick succession is difficult, so you just need to be a bit cautious on stairs and so on at first, just in case they (the steps) aren't exactly where you think they are!

t-i-n, I hope your capillaries have now returned to their rightful place. I find that when people are confronted with

it can have an inhibatory effect on pursuing a deep and meaningful relationship. Or even a meaningless one Grin Grin

Ho MorticiaaaAAA!  Take it easy with your new "eyes".  Try up and down stairs a few times - but don't fall.  I use bi-focals but my wife has vari and found them o.k. after a very short while.  They do seem to have the effect of making glasses of wine look very small though.  Well, that's what she maintains.  Ho!
Cheers.

I see a swarm of bees descending on Mount Etna and indulging in an Ancient Pollen Productivity Rite involving the use of willing sacrificial victims who believed themselves to have been drones in a previous life. Am I close?

Not really, Mort. Perhaps go back to the line underlined in green.  Grin

Now, where did I put my specs?

As Liszt said (and I doubt he was the first) "I need my glasses to find my glasses"

(I've worn glasses since I was 13 so over 20 years and I recently had to change them as my prescription had changed.  Most unsettling at first but at least the headaches have gone away now)
