Just to say belatedly that I agree with everybody else.  Hope it all works out.

Likewise. If you have any probs making contact I would suggest the Sally Army here could reach their opposite numbers over there and arrange to call on her fairly easily. Good Luck with it and may your cousin  have some respite/ succour.

Well tommo... 'Some days is good and some is bad' - that's life I think.

I suppose yesterday was not good but at least I did lots of violin practice , and piano for that matter , so ... can't all be bad!!

Orchestras rehearsal was better after I had sorted all the bowing out!

I woke up - well, I didn't really sleep - still worrying about my son's wedding - or rather my relationship with him at the moment, of which more anon. Then I watched Breakfast on BBC 1 - yes, I know I should listen to Radio 3, but I've got a crush on Bill Turnbull - and as well as the Austrian horror story they were discussing the latest issue of the video "game" Grand Theft Auto, and I'm feeling that the world is irredeemably corrupt. I am actually more despairing about the young men defending the video than I am about the Austrian story. There have always been one-off depraved individuals, but no-one's pretending it's quite OK and normal, whereas people are saying that violent video games are acceptable, because it's not real life.

I have to admit to playing computer games ( and enjoying them ) and I have played Grand theft Auto.. I don't like it though . It is too much like the back streets of any town.. pinching cars etc.
The game I play is far more 'unreal'!!

I just don't understand how a nice person like you can play a game that involves so much violence, and not be upset by it - perhaps you can tell me??? I am genuinely puzzled  Huh.

I feel like that too sometimes Mary.  With regard to violent viewing entertainment, the argument seems to be that it is harmless for most people and only dangerous if someone watching it is unbalanced or easily influenced.  I don't agree at all.  I think it's debasing to anyone.  I know that the Bulger killers had been watching "Chukie" videos and the psychologists at the time felt they had been adversely influenced.

The cry will immediately go up that this is rubbish and it's all harmless, blah, blah, blah.  Nothing we can do in the circumstances except try to protect our own I guess.  Grand Theft Auto is bringing out no. 4 I understand - well whoopy-do.  It is all very depressing though.  Trouble is, if we don't agree with it, we're fuddy-duddy, boring, intolerant and have-no-life.  You stick to your principles Mary!  I have.

With regard to the relationship with your son, try and view it as a passing phase due to the stress of the wedding and life in general.  Nothing lasts forever and I'm sure (without knowing the details but from frequent personal experience) that whatever it is he'll come round in the end.  Obviously, don't try and advise him about anything whatsoever because that won't do at all.  Don't forget that when they're young they know it all.  It's only later when they have time to stop and think that realisation dawns.  Roll Eyes

As I said , the game I play is not as violent as the one you mention, and certainly not as real. The reason I play computer games is so I can relax and think.

I'm sorry, A. I'm very tired and probably can't read straight, or indeed at all.

I hope you feel better soon too Mary.  I know these horrible black dog depressions and although I don't have trouble sleeping in the main, insomnia is only going to make things worse.  It will pass, try and rest as much as you can.  Kiss
