Rutter's agnositcism and Tavener's religiosity were up for discussion on the Today programme this morning. Following a clip from a certain piece for 'cello and orchestra, it was announced as "Protecting the Veil".  Nice slip. I thought. Wink

Yes,I was interested to catch this, purely by chance,as I rarely listen to Radio 4. A meaningful conicidence, perhaps,as Jung would say.

Irononically I caught it while hopping channels to escape Gorecki's 'Maaa-ree-a Ma-re-aaaa' which seems to be turning into the 'O for the wings of a dove 'of the 21st century.

I was disappointed that the discussion was so short and superficial. But maybe it was enough to broach it. I suppose many Radio 4 lisyeners haven't thought that composers of famous sacred music can be agnostics,as Verdi and Vaughan Wiliams both were.

I was a little surprised to find Rutter is an agnostic,as I can't recall his writing any secular music apart from the 'Beatles Concerto'  ,a joint effort with Ron Goodwin.

I bet Howard Goodall isn't agnocstic!

Sir Hubert Parry was also an agnostic, despite composing the music for Jerusalem and several other hymn tunes.

As an old uncle used to say, being born in a stable doesn't make you a horse.
