Can't find any reference to last night's broadcast on BBC4 on any of the boards, did anyone else notice it was on ? Admittedly a programme including La Mer, the Rite and Prelude a L'Apres-Midi doesn't exactly have novelty value but it was worth a watch. Prokofiev's Seven cantata was lively and I thought Gergiev gave a much more energised version of the Rite than the last time I heard him do it ( with the Mariinsky or the Rotterdam ? ) A low key presentation style to the programme too from Ms Mohr Pietsch, maybe that's why no comment on the BBC boards from presenter bashers ?

Tuned in specifically to see/hear Seven, they are seven - a remarkable piece which rarely gets a performance. Problem was that, apart from the percussion, the orchestra couldn't really be heard. The balance certainly favoured the choir and the tenor soloist (who was admirable). Stayed around for the Stravinsky which was energetic, as BobbyZ stated. A pretty impressive performance (an honourable mention for the LSO trumpet section) with some unexpected tempi, many of which worked: in the later stages, however, things almost dragged to a halt. Anybody know what's in store for the other programmes ?

According to Radio Times, the second programme has Debussy's 1st Rhapsody for clarinet, a "Prokofiev cantata" ( no further elaboration ) and Les Noces ( yay ! ) The third programme has Strav's Symphony in Three Movements and Petrushka, three Debussy preludes and Prok's 1st Violin Concerto with Vadim Repin.

Those sound like the LSO concerts that happened around June - I was at the last one (pretty scrappy Symphony in 3 Mvts I'm afraid, if I remember correctly). I wasn't at the second one, although I believe George was, but the Prokofiev cantata in question is that for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution.

The October Cantata, I'd imagine - it was in the same concert last season as Les Noces (I was there).

Well, that was the first time that I have heard the October Revolution anniversary cantata and I was really taken along by the theatricality and spectacle of it. Will have to revisit to get an impression of the lasting musical quality but it was a pretty good way to spend a Friday evening after a tiring and freezing cold week ( was so tired I achieved the feat of dozing during Les Noces which takes some doing. Something else I'll have to revisit )

What is that "wobbling hands" thing, anyhow?  What does it mean?  Bravo to anyone who can follow it...

I knew there was something I meant to record tonight: but that Les Noces drove me to distraction when it was broadcast on R3, so maybe not too much of a loss....

I love Petrushka but seem to have encountered it rather a lot recently. Anyone else catch this evening's concert ? T-i-n has already said he found the Symphony in Three Movements scrappy, any opinions on Repin's playing of the Prokofiev concerto ? Or the point of Colin Matthews's Debussy orchestrations ? I enjoyed both but don't have the critical vocabulary to articulate why.

Forgot this one again, so just as well that it's repeated from 02:15 to 04:00 tonight. I'll set the recorder now, before I forget....

Me too Ron. Many thanks for the reminderl, Bobby Z. I might need to clear a little space on the hard drive to get the best quality.

Colin Matthews's Debussy orchestrations
Oh, I'd forgotten that was where I heard those!

It's funny, I'd expected to hate them (or just find them utterly pointless, as you suggest), but in fact I enjoyed them very much. Can't, um, remember why now though. I guess I should go to bed. It's cold. My brain's descending into deep freeze.
