A film rejected by the BBC (in astonishing circumstances, see below) is being shown on Channel 5 now

'O Thou Transcendent': The Life Of Ralph Vaughan Williams
Tuesday 1st January
Time - 09:00 - 12:00 (3 hrs)

Comprehensive profile of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, from award-winning filmmaker Tony Palmer. The film charts the life of the composer with contributions from friends, family and admirers, alongside exclusive performances of his symphonies, choral pieces, chamber music and film scores from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and Gloucester Cathedral Choir.

Catching just bits of the programme, very interesting, lots of detail about life and work, but so far just snippets of recent performances. Is there a complete performance of anything at the end of the programme?

Oh, and check this out

Tony Palmer blasts BBC ignorance

Tony Palmer blasts BBC ignorance

And note the following section at the end:

A BBC spokeswoman said: 'Television arts commissioning can find no record of receiving a proposal from Tony Palmer. This rejection letter did not come from them. We are unable to take this letter seriously without seeing it or being given the name of who sent it.

'We had already begun developing a film with John Bridcut on Vaughan Williams in early 2006. We reject any suggestion that films require celebrity involvement to be commissioned,' she added.

And the other thread on the subject ( http://r3ok.myforum365.com/index.php?topic=1687.0 ).

Thanks Aitch I forgot to look for that other thread. It's all a bit suspicious if the letter Tony Palmer 'received' does not indicate who wrote it Huh Is this the sort of stunt that Palmer might pull to discredit the BBC?

Most amusing Mr. Wright! When things go wrong in England they go very very wrong. We used to blame secret northern American infiltration for this kind of thing, but it has become so bad now that that in itself hardly suffices as the entire explanation. There is something wilful about it is there not? Perhaps if the paid staff were ordered to cut their hair neatly and wear suits and ties this sort of thing would stop happening.

Most amusing Mr Grew. We know some staff at the BBC are very uninformed about music (particularly at BBC Radio 2) but if Tony Palmer cannot expand on who wrote the letter to him then the wilfulness must seem to have been his.

Well, we didn't.

While speaking for a few short periods Mr Palmer did say at least four times "... you know what I'm saying?...."

Why are such 'prominent' people often so hopeless on the radio? I've been on the radio and not made a fool of myself Roll Eyes
