Trouble is, John, the audio quality on the Performance Channel is so dire (128kbps intensity js, last time I checked). I have the DVDs of Gielen's Beethoven symphonies. Well worth getting, and pretty cheap too, for numbers 1 to 6 via Amazon UK. However, the DVD of 7 to 9 has shot up in price there at the moment. The DVDs offer LPCD 16/48 stereo, and 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS.

I do find the Performance Channel frustrating in the number of ad breaks, even between movements of a symphony! SkyArts are so much better - the operas come complete, no ad breaks at all and no celebrity interviews in between acts as on the BBC.

Sort of good to know theyre still in existence-the downside is they have to put terrible ads on. Sky Arts is perversely good since its on the same continuum as umpteen shopping channels and the horrors of Fox TVs political garbage-mongering in the states. I've dispensed with the Tv myself, though I see the Guttenberg galaxy is on the march towards the net...

I was interested to see the technical proof for the poor audio quality of the Performance Channel, something I had always suspected. I wonder whether Bryn (or someone else) has the figures for SkyArts. My suspicion is that the quality is much better, as the programmes are, of course! It would be interesting to see the figures.

I've just noticed that the Performance Channel is no more.

I hadn't realised it ran for 23 years, but I rarely watched it compared to SkyArts, which I find much better.
