Eric Coates: The King Of Light Music

BBC Radio 4

Saturday 23 February 2008 15:30-16:00

Repeated: Tuesday 26 February 2008 13:30-14:00

Alasdair Molloy explores the career of Eric Coates. Although best known for his signature tune to Desert Island Discs and The Dambusters March, Coates's orchestral music is coming back to the concert hall.

Alasdair profiles a man who had to wear shirt, tie and tweed jacket and light up a cigarette before he could sit down and compose, as well as a man keen on photography, fast cars and the Charleston.

Hurrah!  I've already set VideoPlus.

If only both R2 and R3 would feature more by Coates and others who composed in that style.

It's a year now since Brian Kay's Light Programme bit the dust.

I just listened to the programme via the listen again option, Ian.

It was a nice programme featuring some old fragments from an interview with Eric Coates and I heard some funny anecdotes: Coates could only compose music when he was wearing a suit.  Cheesy

You can listen to the programme over here:

The programme will be repeated on Radio 4 tomorrow.
