Yes, I know BBC4 is a TV station, but you can just listen  Cheesy

Anyway tonight (after midnight) there is a proms treat featuring among others Maxim Vengerov:

1:50 am Proms on FOUR 2006
Maxim Vengerov plays Mozart's 4th violin concerto, and Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and Ravel's Piano Concerto in G.

I'll try and remember to set the VCR ( my daughter has Sky+ upsatairs but not figured that out yet)

Thanks, John: I'd not seen this when I posted a list of links to the whole week's Proms on Four repeats in the TTN thread.

I remember watching this last summer and being extremely impressed that he could play and conduct at the same time. Although it led me to think that if the orchestra didn't need him to conduct for 50% of the time then maybe they didn't need him at all...?  Tongue

Talking about superfluous players, I was watching a DVD of an orchestra playing once and at one point the violins had a difficult page turn so about half of them stopped playing to turn the page whilst those sitting next to them carried on. The difference in sound was barely noticeable. It makes you think.

Ah, but by that logic, Tony, you'd get rid of 10 of the 20 players as 'surplus to requirements'.

Then you'd have 5 people turning pages, but that wouldn't make any difference to the sound, so get rid of them too.  Then you could get rid of the 3 remaining page turners, as they didn't make any difference.  And of course, you never have 2 violins playing the same line.......

Page Turns might make a difference for just a leader though................................

Ah but, the difference in sound was barely noticeable at that part of the piece. Later on you would notice a lack in strings.... I expect  Cheesy

BBC 4 Tonight (update)

06.07.07 - 2000 to 2100
Classic Britannia Part 3 of 3. Adapt or Die.

It sounds positively Da(wkin)(rw)inistic.
Although, no doubt, Syd will l(oathe)ove it.

 Sad
