Ist ein schwieriges Beginnen,	it’s difficult to begin
Und gelinget andern nie	and succeed in anything
Als der Lieb’ und Poesie.	other than love and poetry.
Liebe läßt sich nichts entrinnen,	Love allows nothing to escape,
Hat nicht außen, sondern innen;	it has nothing outside: there is only inside;
Und das Nichts, sie weiß nicht wie,	and that nothing, it doesn’t know how,
Macht zum Etwas Poesie.	can make something poetic.
Nicht dahin ist, was von hinnen,	It’s not inside, what
Bleibt im Sinn, nicht in den Sinnen;	lives in the mind, it’s not in the senses.
Fest auf ewig haltens die	Fixed in eternity both are held:
