I sense your tongue is in your diplomatic cheek George. There's something about the '...Nevertheless' that
implies a brainstorm occured and was somehow averted because of the mere idea of any deficiency in the presentation- maybe because their tenet is that the audience exists in a paralell universe. But for all its
pussyfooting, you got a response George.Garnett for DG.

I think that's more of a safety notice, George, for those unsteady on their heels.

The "nevertheless" suggests to me that the letter was drafted by a junior staff-member who joined two standard paragraphs together without reading them afterwards .. Sad

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

Today is May 18th.
I just turned the radio on and I hear absolutely beautiful performance by Cedric Tiberghien. He is playing Schumann.
I am so excited that there is such a good young pianist.
I discovered lately so many good young pianists.

t-p

I am enjoying it too. Naughtily listening at work.

I have just been ordering a CD of the Bruch Octet, there was only one disc at www.mdt.co.uk

(This is called "Multitasking", listening to the radio, ordering CD online, replying to your post, and , oh yes, working !)

I will be looking forward to listening to it next week when it arrives. Thankyou for pointing it in my direction.

Janthefan,
I think a little distraction will make you more productive. I am sure of that.

I am still waiting for my turn to listen to Bruch. I have to think what to buy because I need so much.
On the other forum Anna posted interesting post about Rachmaninoff's opera Francesca Da Rimini.
Also Buxtehuda is on my list. I have to be selective.
Please tell me what you will think of Bruch's octet. My friend told me it is good, but he is still listening.

I think I'll start a thread on "What's on my wish-list"....I too have a great long list of CDs I wish to buy. I usually spend about £25 a month, usually about this time, when I'm into a new credit card bill era, and dont actually have to pay up for about 6 weeks!

I'm usually slow on the uptake so I may be the last one to have noticed this but I see that the R3 website and the Radio Times now show the times again for (most) individual pieces on Afternoon on 3. Listener power! Huzzah!

(But, to show who is in charge, they seem to have removed timings from Performance on 3 in the evenings. I suppose it would be greedy to expect both.  Undecided)

Alison Balsom, a name that I think I heard the other day - on In Tune maybe, was playing today. I heard one comment that she is the only female solo trumpeter. I thought she was brilliant and loved the choice of pieces, so I have ordered two of her CDs from HMV. They have one in stick and will order the second.

What do others think of her playing?

I think it's pretty damn good, Susan. She comes in for a lot of stick because she's, er, easy on the eye and knows how to market herself to that effect; but she plays like an angel/demon as appropriate. I've heard her play live several times, including in a piece I wrote for her (just before she hit the big time).  Cool

How lovely. Is the piece on one of her CDs?

Sadly not, Susan! It was a tiny setting of a Whitman poem (soprano) with trumpet, for when she was one of the Park Lane Group's Young Artists. She played it exquisitely.

I saw her earlier this year playing the Haydn Concerto with the RSNO in Dundee, Susan. Was very impressed not only with her performance, but the interview she did before the concert with one of the orchestra's trumpeters, and especially with the fact that she added a section of her own to talk about the final work in the concert, James MacMillan's The Confession of Isobel Gowdie, which she knew might be unknown territory for many of the audience, but to which she gave an enthusiastic introduction.

Best of all, from where I was sitting in the hall, I was able to see her sneak into the auditorium and slip into a spare side seat whilst the orchestra was tuning up before the performance of Gowdie: her enthusiasm much more than lip service. I see that she'll be back in Dundee in Autumn with the Scottish Ensemble. It's already in my diary....
