Monsieur Hamelin gave his services today, a delayed broadcast from the Cheltenham Festival.
Haydn: Sonatas in F and B flat
Weissenberg: Sonate en etat de jazz
Schubert: Sonata D960
I forced myself to listen to the Schubert, although I was worried that it would feel 'too soon' after Brendel's still-only-whisperable-of rendition the other week. This proved unfounded, although I'm far more conscious of the passage of time here - he goes for the expression in the first movement (the start is a real creep-in) leading to a length of 22 minutes. There are some odd accents on bottom Fs in the 3rd movement, But it's still far more polished than the only recording I have (Naum Grubert)
, so a keeper.
