Not forgetting the orchestral music (of which there isn't an awful lot) which is available complete in two different recordings, one on DG with Camerata Bern, the other on cpo with Das Neu-Eröffnete Orchester - the former has the more lively performances, the latter period instruments, which tips the balance for me in its favour: it's one thing to hear Barry Tuckwell having fun with the quite extreme horn parts in the Camerata Bern set, quite another to hear them being played without valves.

I have the Camerata Bern on vinyl, his music has many moments unlike anyone else was writing. And how about this, eye-watering..... MISSA CIRCUMCISIONIS !

Yes, come to think of it there's a whole series of Masses by Zelenka on a fairly large scale, with vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra - Missa Dei Patris, Missa Dei Filii and Missa Omnium Sanctorum are the ones I've heard - which contain plenty of beautiful music. I don't know the circumcision one though.

Hope it's OK to resurrect an old thread... Zelenka is extraordinary, mysterious (the picture at the head of the thread is NOT Zelenka - there's no portrait, no one knows what he looked like - but Fux) admired by Bach and Telemann, eccentric, vastly under-played and under-rated. Much of his work was thought destroyed by British Bomber Command in the Dresden firestorm of 1945 but is now surfacing in Russian libraries. I mean, just listen to this. The bassoon player almost has a coronary! Zelenka Trio Sonata in F major ZWV 181 - III. Allegro

It's absolutely fine to resurrect old threads, particularly when you have something so positive and useful to add, Philidor.

Yes, thanks Philidor. I've just listened to that movement and it's pretty remarkable.

LOL You can't buy that particular recording - the record company went bust mid-session - but three of the six can be downloaded here for non-commercial use. Which is a further irony: the best recording of Zelenka's best trios exist only on some dusty tape in a liquidated record label's assets.

Wonderful isn't he? Wait till you hear a mass... Is that one on the Holliger disc that Evan recommended further up the thread?
Absolutely not. I admire Hollinger - apart from everything else he's big Zelenka fan and did much to bring him to light - but these use period instruments, a mix of continuo styles, quicker tempi, wider dynamics, less vibrato, and are generally a lot better (imo). Shame three of the six are missing - bailiffs threw them from the recording studio in mid session. A further taster: first movement from the last of the set: Zelenka Trio Sonata in C minor ZWV 181 - I. AndanteWeird or what?

I was bowled over by a broadcast performance of the Sinfonia in A some years ago and could not get the wonderful Capricco movement out of my head. I have heard three other versions since ( I have the DGG Camerata Bern) but all have sounded dull compared to that broadcast. The music sounds so joyous which is strange as Zelenka was apparently a rather bitter man.
