Did anyone here watch the claymation series on MTV Celebrity Death Match?  This would be a good one.

...which reminds me that I've heard one reason Handel and Bach never met was that Handel was (allegedly) afraid they would be asked to have a face-off at the organ and his pedal technique after so long in England (where, again allegedly, pedals weren't such a big thing) wouldn't be up to it.

Anyone else also heard this?

I did not hear that story. I heard that Handel was very nice man and musicians loved him.
I don't even know whether or not Bach knew Handel and his music.

This is a tough one. I love them both.
For me Handel is easier to grasp, sentual, melodious.
But if there is a gun to my head I will go with Bach and say that he is the greatest of the two.

I don't think they ever met but I have a feeling they knew each other's music. I also don't know if Bach ever said the much-quoted "Handel is the only person I would wish to see before I die, and the only person I would wish to be, were I not Bach". Somehow I doubt he would have said those words. Even in German.

I'd like to see them pitted against each other at Pub Sports - that would really sort out which was the greatest composer. Shove Ha'penny, Nine-Pins, Darts, and a Pub Trivia Quiz.

Or perhaps a Ballroom Dancing tournament?  Bach's fancy pedal-work would have left him supple enough for the Paso-Doble and the Cha-Cha-Cha,  although Handel's rhythmic suavity would have given him the advantage in the Beguine and the Merengue.

...althoguh musically speaking I think one could say that Handel had more children and Bach more grandchildren.

There's my meaningless twaddle for the day accounted for.  Roll Eyes

I notice (once again) Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) doesn't get a look in.  Angry

Kitty, thanks for that. A really interesting link, I`m not familiar with him. Unfortunately I wasn`t able to listen to the music links. It was playing but no sound Angry And yes, I did have my speakers on!

Hoary old chestnut from exam paper

Q Describe a difference between Bach and Handel

A Bach always has his organ working harder at the climaxes

No contest in the paternity department.....

Well, with all those kids workin' away copying out the parts for this and that, and finishing things off for him, no wonder he was able to be so prolific Wink

You can just picture the family scene at suppertime, with JC saying to CPE...  "Here, can you polish the rest off for me?  In G minor in 12/8,  with a modulation into the relative major at Bar 32, an interrupted cadence at Bar 48, finishing in the tonic at Bar 60.  In the style of JS Bach. If you do it before lunchtime, you can go out play Sturm & Drang with Stamitz in the afternoon."
