Hands up all those - like me - who are looking forward to five solid Saturday mornings of The Ring! One opera each programme, followed up with DVD versions on week 5! Sheer Heaven - well done R3!

Absolutely - required listening (or recording, in my case). I'm particularly interested in how they 'do' the DVD comparisons on the radio, as surely the type/style of production is as likely to influence buyers in their selection as the musical side of things, but we've started to get round that with posting some screenshots here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio3/F6643901?thread=4922966

You might also enjoy reading our thoughts on the Haenchen cycle on SACD and DVD (the same production, but recorded some time apart with largely different casts): http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbradio3/F6643901?thread=4922966

Definitely one to catch.  BAL has done this before - many years ago, with the late and great Alan Blyth making the comparisons and recommending, IIRC, the Bohm/Bayreuth set.  But there have been plenty of new issues (and reissues) since then - Barenboim, the underrated Sawallisch and Keilberth on Testament, to name but three, so it'll be a fascinating few weeks.

Does anyone know if the Thielemann Bayreuth Ring currently airing on R3, an act per day, is due to be released in any form? I ask because it sounds very, very good from the bits I've heard - dazzling, orchestrally.

I have no idea, but I agree about it being dazzling orchestrally.  I just wish they'd sack the Rhinemaidens, or at least the Woglinde, who's about as good at making a pleasant sound as she is at making sure dwarves don't nick her gold.

Ruth, I didn't catch any of Rhinegold, but had a 'must stop the car' moment towards the end of Walkure Act 3 when it would not have been safe to continue driving (and that went for B-hilde's and Wotan's voices too - haven't clocked who's singing yet).

I'm afraid the only moment I had during Walkure was a prolonged "I wish my mum liked Wagner" moment.  I was a guest in her house for all of those three days, and missed the whole opera  Cry

Did you, by any chance, record it?  I tried - knowing I wouldn't be able to catch it at Mum's - but somehow managed to set my PVR to the wrong channel entirely, and ended up with several hours of one of the minor ITV channels instead Huh

Am currently catching up with Walkure Act III on Listen Again, and even in carp sound with dropouts it's mightily impressive - as have been the other snippets I have managed to hear.  No idea whether there will be a commercial issue, but since Thielemann is a DGG "hot property" and nobody is making studio opera any more, one can but hope.

And now it's conked out altogether.  I suppose providing a decent quality service would mean the BBC cutting back on the things that matter to it, like the National Lottery Live and Jonathan Ross' salary .... Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

I'll get me coat and head for the grumpy room

If all else fails, Ruth, I have it recorded from DAB to minidisc at LP4 setting.  It's good enough for me (at least I presume it is;  haven't played it back yet) but might not sound so great on a high-spec player.  I could make a copy and put it with your E di L programme for future delivery if you can't get hold of one any other way.

Hi HtoHe... Thanks very much, however I have had another offer via PM - so I think I'm sorted! Kiss

# 12       Hi, HtoHe.     I was interested to read that you are recording the Bayreuth 2007 Ring on minidisc at LP4 setting; I am doing the same but at LP2 setting, from DAB, as LP4 is inclined to sound constricted on my Sony equipment.  However, I recorded Act 1 of Gotterdammerung on one MD and should comfortably fit Acts 2 & 3  on a second MD.   Orchestrally, the whole cycle has been a rare treat and Albert Dohmen's Wotan goes straight to the first rate league.

Incidentally, I got Thielemann's DG 'Parsifal', 4 CD set, from hmv.online for just under £15 a few weeks ago; a sound investment.
