Messiaen: Vingt Regards
Just listening to VI. Par lu tout a été fait and I'm quite surprised that it sounds a bit like a Ligeti Etude...
Maybe as a result of the fact that, especially from the passage beginning on the fourth page of that piece, it sets certain processes into 'auto-pilot', and then lets them just run their course?
That sounds very probably, but there's something in the 'gear-changes' between different areas that made me think it too.

That's another fine Messiaen you've got yourself into.

Musica ricercata is a lot of fun to play.
A while ago, I started to listen to the Études in books, rather than (as I would do previously) all in one go. Listening to them like that really brought out some kind of formal narrative of which I was ignorant listening to them either in isolation or smeared all over an afternoon.
I think that the Messiaen has something that the Ligeti lacks though. I'm kind of reminded of Finnissy's comments on Ligeti with which I've never really decided whether I completely agree. Messiaen's belief system seems to give the music (and I'm cautious that I'm approaching 'spiritual' territory here) a visceral emotional basis that can leave the Ligeti seeming rather sterile, brittle and joyless.
Might have to listen to some Nancarrow in a minute.

Ra du Lu pu plays Schubert's Moments Musicaux.

Not sure if he's related to Sun Ra, but he's got a nice touch.

Ooh; that remind me; I'm in the mood to listen to No. 7 at the moment.  And *that* gives me a reason to post here.  How terribly convenient this all is.

Insufficient information. What instrument was used for this recording? Or to put it another way, Wergo CD, MDG CDor Arch LP? Wink

Wergo CD.
I've never heard any other recordings (should I be  Embarrasseding?) so I'd be really grateful if you could tell me how the recordings differ.

Here in gloomy Bracken Hale, it John Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra (to test my new £34 DVD Audio player, you understand). I'm currently finding it difficult to believe how good this Woolies bargain basement player is, (Technosonic DVD 2088). It plays DVD Video, DVD Audio, VCD, S-VCD, mp3, mp2, wma, jpeg, etc., connects via phono, SCART or HDMI, and even comes with both SCART and HDMI leads! Oh, and it reads various memory cards too. Just pop in an SD card with mp2s fom a Pure Bug on it, and it plays them beautifully.

Oh yes, it handles surround as well as 2 channel stereo. Even via the analogue outputs the sound is remarkably good.

Well, you can't expect perfection at that price. If you feed it a DVD with a 96ksps sample rate, it downsamples it to 48k.

Currently it's spinning mp3s of LaMonte Young's "The Well-Tuned Piano".

Well, if you ever happen across any of the Arch LPs., grab it quick. They are like gold dust. Unlike the Wergo set, they were recorded on the instrument Nancarrow intended them for (it was out of commission when the Wergo sessions took place). The MDG ongoing set is quite remarkably better in sound than the Wergo. They use, with Nacarrows express approval, a restored Bösendorfer grand player piano, with hammer board addapted to Nancarrows requirements. Don't hesitate.

By the way, the information on the Forced Exposure site regarding these recordings is bogus. The instrument was not Nancarrow's. He did like the results he heard from it though.

Angela Hewitt - Bach 2 part inventions. Not sure I like it as much as some of her other Bach recordings - rather aggressive and clipped. Also, having problems with the pitch of the instrument (s?) - some of the inventions sounded quite sharp, a problem I recall with her English Suites. Anyone else been disturbed by this?
