Music by Fernande Decrück, Claude Delvincourt, Pierrre Sancan, Paule Maurice, Charles Kœchlin, Alfred Desenclos. I think you'll probably already know if this would be one for you. I have a distinct soft spot for the Maurice Tableaux de Provence and the Decrück Sonata is also rather lovely. And the playing is quite extraordinary - they're an amazing duo.

Apropos de Shostakovich 13 - for me there's Kondrashin and Kondrashin. Either the one in the box with Artur Eisen or the one of the second performance (I remember reading that's what it was but can't remember where) with Vitaly Gromadsky. Gripping in that Kondrashin nether-regions-in-a-vice way. I do have some other recordings but they don't get played all that much.

For the hard of seeing, it's Beethoven's piano concertos, played by Melvyn Tan with the London Classical Players and Roger Norrington.

Melvyn Tan
He appears to have painted his fingernails.

One of the worst covers I've seen in a long time. Thankfully the contents are more promising. Wink

I have had a thoroughly lovely time today listening through (for the first time) to the fantastic Les Indes Galantes in this recording that I borrowed from the library. And it has been pretty much love at first sight. I did not hear a moment of it that I did not find completely fresh or captivating in some way. I'm sure it would gain greatly from being seen, it has zero dramatic tension, nor is it meant to I think, but there is so much joy and energy in the music, wave upon wave of it, and it hardly ever seems to stop (despite being let down a little I thought by some of the singing on this recording).

There were so many highlights that it's hard to know what to point at, but the quartet in the 3rd Entree I found really moving, the music for the eruption of the volcano in the 2nd Entree is really thrilling, and the Rondeau in the final Entree is just indescribably happy. But there just don't seem to be any weak points at all in the whole 3 hours.

I am off hunting for the William Christie dvd.

Les Indes Galantes enthusiasts new and old (and I'm one of the very new ones having got to hear it only recently as the result of a recommendation here) may wish to note with salivating excitement that William Christie and Les Arts Florissants are performing it at the Barbican on 4 November this year. A concert performance, at least I assume it is, but even so quite enough to get me drooling in anticipation.

Not to be missed (I hope).

Oooh. The eve of my 29th birthday.

I wonder how far in advance some well-wisher would have to book my present? Cheesy Grin

Indeed! I'm in seat M22 in the Stalls if anyone would like either to say hallo or steer well clear depending on the state of Message Board relations by then.

Gosh, tinners, that means you are precisely one year older than my daughter. Or maybe we have had this conversation before and I'd forgotten.

Daniel, that Christie DVD is well worth seeking out - pure joy, especially the encore they give with the entire cast (Christie included) dancing around on stage!  Cheesy

Thanks IGI, I am really looking forward to seeing it! I've found a clip of that encore you mention here. I love that Rondeau!

Thanks to you too George. I have no idea if I can make that yet, but just the mention of it gives me a nice warm feeling inside.  Cool
