I have had a thoroughly lovely time today listening through (for the first time) to the fantastic
Les Indes Galantes in
this recording that I borrowed from the library. And it has been pretty much love at first sight. I did not hear a moment of it that I did not find completely fresh or captivating in some way. I'm sure it would gain greatly from being seen, it has zero dramatic tension, nor is it meant to I think, but there is so much joy and energy in the music, wave upon wave of it, and it hardly ever seems to stop (despite being let down a little I thought by some of the singing on this recording).
There were so many highlights that it's hard to know what to point at, but the quartet in the 3rd
Entree I found really moving, the music for the eruption of the volcano in the 2nd
Entree is
really thrilling, and the Rondeau in the final
Entree is just indescribably happy. But there just don't seem to be any weak points at all in the whole 3 hours.
I am off hunting for the William Christie dvd.
