Has anyone had a go at this yet?
Not yet! (At least, not I.) I saw it in a shop in Guess Where a couple of days back but was already a bit loaded up...

Hm, my wilful misinterpretation circuit certainly kicked in here:

Chant des Déportés, for large soprano and tenor chorus & orchestra

Daft, isn't it. For delivery to the UK, it's cheaper to order it from the US Amazon Marketplace than the French one.

Not keen on Po3 or Eastenders tonight, so another boxed set gets selected

Borodin: complete orchestral music, RCA 1977 set, Loris Tjeknavorian

Starting with Symphony No 1, very enjoyable. Borodin's symphonies don't appear much in the Radio 3 repertoire? Some good notes with this set, I will certainly learn much by the time I get through it.

John, I don't think I've ever knowingly heard any of Borodin's symphonies other than the 2nd (which is obviously the most popular). Say more, as and when...

There's a very good set of the symphonies from Neeme Järvi and the Gothenburg SO, although it may be hard to find now. Brilliant have recently reissued Gennady Rozhdestvensky's Royal Stockholm PO's Chandos survey, which can be recommended. Avoid the Naxos one under Gunzenhauser. I hope that Warner reissue Svetlanov's RCA cycle in their ongoing retrospective devoted to him.

Decca have a cheap eloquence issue with Borodin 2 (the classic Martinon version), No.3 (Ansermet) and the Prince Igor Overture and Polovtsian Dances (Solti) here - hugely enjoyable.

Well martle I'm reading that No 1 was composed over a few years in the early 1860s, presumably he was still a professor of chemistry then, and this was around the time of Tchaikovsky's 1st.

To my ears the symphony is very fresh, while the notes go to great length to explain "flat" and "sharp" relationships which I can't understand  Smiley

The Gardiner Les Troyens DVD was spinning until the end of the Andromache scene where I had to have a little break.

Goodness gracious me. So much Berlioz I'd never heard before. And so damn good.

No - the NYOGB itself - i.e. the chosen children (i.e. the right offspring)

I hope you heard my groan of a couple of seconds ago, Member ahinton... it was certainly loud enough. Roll Eyes

(And yes, there was an admixture of jealousy.)

Spinning here until a couple of minutes ago:

If there's a better one I'd like to know about it. I was almost able to forget how dodgy I find the text to be and that's saying something. Very funky playing. And a basson. Who could ask for anything more? Smiley

Mme Milhaud plus Stokowski?

It's a while since I heard it - I have the World Record Club LP reissue, but it's always struck me as very French indeed, and very dramatic.

Gosh, opilec, I must remember to watch what I plug around here...  Wink

(Don't know what you're paying for it but I found mine for €9 at fnac St-Lazare last week... it seems our paths nearly crossed! Please don't tell me you were at the OPRF Messiaen concert on Friday or I'll be dreadfully embarrassed...)
