Ooookay, Richard. It's on order Roll Eyes.  You do realise though that, between you, you and Ollie have persuaded me to buy three more Mahler 9s than I had thought was quite enough for anyone. You and Ollie haven't thought of giving up the evening jobs and going into marketing have you?

No complaints so far though and I'll trust you this one more time.

What about Ron?

I think Ollie, being the conductor among us, should get HIS performance of Mahler 9 up and running so we can discard all the others.

Not guilty - at least in not in the Mahler department, for here there are not only no duplications on commercial disc, but not even every symphony represented (though a considerably higher percentage than Wolfie's).

Your comments regarding conductors of the past ring largely true for Shostakovich and RVW, too, r, he says (moving briskly to an area where he does have a modicum of experience, not to mention the linear footage of jam-packed shelving to back it up).

Anyone knowing an orchestra which would be silly enough to let me in front of it for such a project who has been sitting on that information should certainly feel free to come forward at this point. Wink

I've been listening to Chris Dench's ik(s)land{s} over and over again while I go through the drudge work of sketching out the layout of a new score.  This is a gorgeous, gorgeous thing.  (The piece, that is, not the score, although hopefully there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when the score won't be too hideous either.)

(Please note, pedants, that the curly brackets around the final s up there should be straight brackets but the quasi-HTML processor lodged an objection.)

the fact that said score is destined for the perusal of the conductor of this performance is purely coincidental actually

Ollie does a quick bit of mental arithmetic and realises he has more recordings of any individual Mahler symphony than Ron does of the whole lot.  Shocked Help!

(In some cases possibly 3 times as many, depending how many symphonies Ron does indeed have...)

Help!Help. I am in the same position regarding the Mahler symphonies.Even my least favourite one (the eighth) I have 12 different commercial versions.I have been collecting a long time now and as I am retired now I can no longer afford to buy as many CD's as I used to.It is mainly carboot sales and charity shops for me although the chances of finding any thing I want are not as frequent now.I am listening to the Bournemouth/Marin Alsop Mahler 9 as I type this and it reminds me of the latest find in a charity shop earlier today-Mahler 8/Gielen on Sony for a pound!Luckily I had my list book with me that told me that I already had that version so I saved myself a pound! On second thoughts if I go down the town tomorrow I will certainly buy it if it is still there. In the days of LP I had a version of the 10th that I have never seen on CD that I remember quite fondly. It was I believe,on the Philips label, conducted by Wyn Morris and I remember it because of the recording quality, especially the woodwinds although maybe my memory is not as accurate as I would like it to be.Has it ever been available on CD?Even though I have loads of Mahler symphonies on CD in my collection  some of the Shostakovich symphonies(4,7,8 and 10) are getting to be almost as numerous!

Not quite there on 11 (I have had 12 but divested myself of the Solti).

And would you believe it, for me the most fulfilling of them all is still the first one I bought.

And I regret nothing. (At least, not in this connection.)  Cool

Hi tonybob, nice to hear from you. You've been ignoring your cricket thread too! The season's well under way now, we might even get a bit of good weather in the next few days.

Despite claims to the contrary by Tony Duggan, I don't think it has. However, I just happen to have dug my copy of the LPs out of the loft a month or so ago. Must get round to listening to it/backing it up in digital format, some time soon.

[Now backing it up at 88.2ksps/24 bit for later cleaning up and down-sampling/noise shaping to CD-R. By the way, the "recording was produced for Crollard Investments, Ltd. by GavinBarrett. Sound Engineer: Robert Auger", and issued by Philips, rather than being one of their own recordings. Fortunately it is spread over four LP sides, so the dynamic range is not too bad at all.]
