I haven't got time to read this thread at the moment, but I wanted to say that I listened to this at the weekend:

And I really rather enjoyed it.
I will come back to everything I've missed here at a later date, but for now, THE SHOWER!

Indeed not, Master Sloth. The Profs at Muppet Labs have sneakily been watching what you get up to when you think no one's around and have rumbled you: http://royalsociety.org/news.asp?id=7721

Similar attempts to clear the name of the Glutton have however proved less successful.

Debussy certainly did, IIRC - didn't he describe it as resembling "a turd floating down the Seine"?
A major or a minor turd?

Or perhaps a Picardy turd?

UNISON, FOURTH AND FIFTH ONLY. ALL OTHER INTERVALS ARE SHIT.

NS Franck, Symphony in d minor

Cluytens, Orch della Svizzera Italiana

This piece, which I've never heard before, I find quite nauseating so far (just the first movement). Am I just an ignoramus, or do other members have misgivings about it (the piece)?

When my youth orchestra played this, we came up with some, um, scintillating lyrics to go along with it:
I - am sick,
I - am sick,
bleah bleah bleeeeeah, bleah bleah,
bleah bleah bleeeeeah, bleah bleah,
(continue with vomiting noises until your giggles make it impossible to continue)

Ah, the wit and wisdom of pre-adolescence.

Turfers, my name is martle and I am a Franckophobic. You are not alone. I've felt nauseated by the harmony of that piece in particular since first hearing it 25 years ago.

(Quite like the violin sonata, though.)

Martle, try "Le Chasseur Maudit" - it's totally unlike the symphony and superb!

I've just had a look at the sleeve (haven't had time to read the notes properly - it arrived on friday, I ripped it onto the hard drive and listened to it in the bleak mid-marking) and I can't find any details about the recording dates... Sorry.

I believe it indeed to be a reissue. The recording of furioso is also relatively elderly I think although the gegen unendlich is reasonably new. I'm some distance from my copy though.

After enjoying what I've heard of Rozhdestvensky's Shostakovich recordings...

The complete set of the symphonies (originally on Melodiya) released on the Venezia label via HMV Japan for a very reasonable price.  Smiley
I may take some time to work through this set, but could well report back on the Shostakovich thread...

Rather predictably, it's Tristan und Isolde again.

Freshly delivered from Japan, the latest release in Zinman's Mahler cycle...

So far (third movement), very promising, not as swift as I had expected; in fact, a very spacious reading.
