Also love this:

"... whereupon he sent word that her ears were out of tune"
You know where it comes from, though? It's supposed to have been Tye's response when Queen Elizabeth sent a verger to reproach him for playing out of tune.

Tommo: boom tish.

I'm surprised he wasn't separated from his own ears for that...

Froberger, "ou l'intranquillité"
Blandine Verlet, harpsichord

Quite wonderful.  (Thanks, Evan!)

Not spinning, but LA-ing to Bernstein, Fancy Free suite. Superb - energy and polish and wit. Completely distinctive and strangely dark beneath its glittering big-band surface. And, of course, irresistible in the LB and NY Phil performance.

Listened to Feldman's For Stefan Wolpe again tonight and found it utterly beautiful.

Some of it felt like contained hysteria, some of it like yearning, and such a stillness!

I listened to it here http://artofthestates.org/cgi-bin/piece.pl?pid=104

I got into a right mess trying to highlight the word here and turn it into a hyperlink (by clicking on the globe), so if anybody passing knows how to do it I'd welcome any help.

'Songs of the Auvergne' with Kiri Te Kanawa, 2xCD set. Haven't listened to it for ages. Not something I want to listen to too often, but a nice change.

Hi Daniel,

There's a help guide on the site which is very useful. That's how I found this out:

You've typed "here";
highlight it and click on the globe and you'll have (url)here(/url) but with square brackets instead of round ones;
after the first url type = and then http://artofthestates.org/cgi-bin/piece.pl?pid=104.

Result: your link here.

Hope that's useful.

Just listening to one of the finest recordings of Mahler's 1st symphony I have come across from Jansons and the Oslo Phil (up there with even Bernstein and Mackerras, if not exceeding them). It comes, interestingly, coupled with the 9th to which I am now very much looking forward.

This sounds very interesting, Tam. I notice that there's a new Jansons/Concertgebouw Mahler 1 on SACD coming out in early May on the RCO Live label.

Yes IGI, I'd already spotted that (judging from the Concertgebouw's website part of a projected cycle - though the 6th was a little disappointing in comparison to his LSO effort).

More info on the upcoming Concertgebouw issue here:

Don't let your hopes be got out by the suggestion that it's been released, it isn't due here until the start of May.

I've only heard the one release on RCO Live - their Dvorak 9, which was a good, if not outstanding, performance, although the SACD sound was very good. Thanks for the link.

On the subject of Mahler 1s, do you know if Abbado's going to re-record the first with the Berlin PO? He did record one in the early 90s, I think, but I wondered if the releases which have garnered so much praise in so many quarters are part of a projected cycle. No.8 is the other notable absence, as it is in Pierre Boulez's series. I wonder if DG have any plans to finish these cycles at all?
