Hermann Goetz - Symphony Op.9 - great stuff, another work that i'd forgotten how good it is.  Earlier listened to Esposito - Works for piano on Chandos.  Really very, very good stuff as well!

Jonathan -- why is it I've never heard of any of the people you listen to? Raff, Esposito, etc -- fascinating.

By the way (little drum roll), this has just recently arrived:

I'm jumpin' on the bandwagon and will spin this later in the pm.

For some reason you sounded like Gabriel Jackson then.

My Sciarrino orchestral discs arrived today. They should have been spinning by now but instead of a late-night listen I seem to have gone for a late-night work session, and now it's almost 1.30 and I have a headache.

Maybe just a taster though...

Let us know what you think.

You sound like Richard Barrett again now btw. Hope that's a comfort in these dark cold hours of the gerbil.

My hair's grown back too.

I settled on I Fuochi oltre la Ragione which I realised I had actually heard before, in Amsterdam in the late 1990s. The "clock" thing outstays its welcome I think.

I found that one of the weaker pieces actually. Possibly the weakest, although the flute thing was a bit Sciarrino-flute-musicky for my liking too.

I don't quite understand why they couldn't have included the two or three other Sciarrino orchestral works that would have made it a comprehensive survey, although unfortunately I hadn't decided this in time to make the point to Mr McGregor on Tuesday.

Very interested to hear more detailed commentary on those Sciarrino discs. They're looking very attractive, but not sure I can afford plumping for the set in the next little while. The Tavola cromatica disc has made its way into my Amazon basket, though, is just waiting for pay-day.

Just seen tinners' latest: I hadn't realised for some reason (although I'm sure you mentioned it) that the Sciarrino you were reviewing was this Sciarrino. 'Cos I'm a moron.
Is it worth getting? And are the pieces missing from this set available elsewhere on disc?

It's worth having (not that I have it except on the CD-Rs I burned on Monday - getting to keep the discs you've reviewed is not a perk of radio reviewing, as they go back to the producer Cry), but I would say go for your existing basket contents first.

Re availability, as far as I'm aware these are all premiere recordings. The only Sciarrino orchestral piece I'm aware of on disc otherwise is the Warner Fonit reissue of the piano concerto Un immagine di Arpocrate, and another, earlier and apparently better recording of the same piece (on Accord I think - nla).

Thanks to a certain member with very elegant handwriting, NS here is Biber's Harmonia Artificiosa-Ariosa, as performed by the Rare Fruits Council.  It's fantastic!

For those who might wonder how it stacks up against the MAK disc of the same, I think I can safely say I wouldn't want to be without either.  Haven't heard the whole thing yet though, so I'll hold back on why until I have a better idea what each offers.

edit:  oooh, tinkly bells!
