That Mitterer CD is absolutely STUNNING, I love it!!!
Yes. I've had it on a few more times since mentioning it here and I have to say I completely agree, a highly intelligent and individual approach to composing with improvisation, and a marvellously lively and involving performance from the composer and Klangforum Wien. Not one for the retired admirals though.

Mahler 7, Tennstedt LPO, because I took the cd of Mahler 9 out of the library to compare it with my own (Barbirolli) and opened it up to find to find no.7 inside.

I think this is the symphony that some criticise for losing the plot in the last movement, but I must say I enjoy it rather when a talent like this misbehaves, and in a way it seems quite a natural reaction to the fraughtness and bleakness that precedes it.

NS: Pascal Dusapin, Medeamaterial, conducted by (really) Herreweghe.  Some Dusapin, particularly for bigger forces, kind of goes in one and out the other for me, but this is a very beautiful piece (for baroque ensemble and voices)...

Oh, I love that version, Tommo - hang on, is it the CBS/Sony original or the DG remake? Either way, Lenny grabs the piece by the scruff of its neck and makes it work

Just to second Ron's verdict there. I actually think it's a pretty flawed (i.e. uneven, slightly lazy, knee-jerk, rushed) work; but LB works the extraordinary magic of which only he was capable on it, and it shines through despite itself!

And it says recorded December 1985 - DG version.

Not sure Marin Alsop is up to it, but fingers crossed.

Anyway, now onto Vaughan William "Job" LSO/Boult

Good thing you're not North of the Border, Tommo, where 'jobby' has - shall we say - a rather less fragrant connotation. In your hands? Awa' and wash them the noo, y' dirrrty wee knaff...

Gosh that was a tad rude the way it came out.  What I meant was that I don't think she's quite like Bernstein.  And if you thought I meant "up for it", martle, then you should go sit on the naughty step.

Now playing Janacek's Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 (and generally the disk by Mikhail Rudy).  I'm enjoying the music so far; it's pretty musical stuff Smiley

Shostakovich 10 / Mravinsky, 1976. For the second time in succession.

Personally I'm more a Kondrashin man as far as Shostakovich goes, partly because he actually did perform and record all the symphonies, which frankly does count for a heck of a lot. But what Mravinsky did well, my god he did well.

(Which includes the Alpine Symphony by the way. Anyone else here know that one?)

Boulez, 'Le Marteau sans Maitre' in a bid to get to know it better since I'm allegedly conducting it just before Christmas...
