...I was actually talking about another composer a bit closer to home who at one point had permitted a partial performance of a multi-movement work. But anyway.

I couldn't quite imagine a performance of the 3rd with the 2nd and 3rd movements reversed; I do think there's a definite trajectory to all those movements, whereby humanity gradually comes to dominate the scene. (Just personally. Donald Mitchell also sees it that way but that's not necessarily a reason to dismiss it out of hand. Wink )

Anyone heard the Zinman Mahler 1 in its entirety ?

The brief extract sounded marvellous - terribly fluent conducting.

Have just listened to it, Alison, and it's definitely worth getting (currently £6.99 inc p&p from HMV which is a bargain). Zinman, as Wilf pointed out elsewhere, has a real feel for Mahler and the orchestra are captured in wonderfully recorded sound.

Can anyone here offer comments, positive or otherwise, re. the Dover Miniature Scores of the Mahler Symphonies?

Not specifically; but I guess your query stems from the fact that Dover scores are always reprints of early editions and as such need to be treated with caution. I'd be interested, actually, to know which editions are currently thought of most highly; I have a mixture of Universal, Eulenberg and Philharmonia and suspect that most have been superseded - I had an idea that Universal were bringing out a more critically aware set of scores (I have a Das Klagende Lied from 1998 or thereabouts); maybe that series is now complete?
