Very colourful and twinkly isn't it? TWINKLY??!! I think she's just trying to get back into your good books because she was listening to something more interesting when it was on originally.

Very colourful and twinkly isn't it? TWINKLY??!! Perhaps I meant tinkly? I do hope I haven't offended you, O Green One, it was just a word that popped into my head - for the bright and sparkly sounds I could hear at that moment...oh dear, I don't think I'll make that career change from teacher to music critic!

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Hi MJ - and anyone else who missed or wants to listen again to Martin Butler's Fairground of Dreams Here's a reasonably high quality mp3 (192 Mbps) - the file is 29MB. Link to download the file: http://files.ww.com/files/43753.htmlPlease let me know if you can't get at it. Andy, many, many thanks for this - I was only able to hear the broadcast on Listen Again, which is only marginally better than not hearing it at all (I'm assuming the trademark LA momentary dropouts and the compression artefacts were not part of the composer's original vision )

At every one of these [classical] concerts in England you will find rows of weary people who are there, not because they really like classical music, but because they think they ought to like it. (Shaw, Don Juan in Hell)

From a review here: http://www.worthingherald.co.uk/classical-music/Petruskha39s-fairground-calls-in-on.3699433.jpSorry - forgotten how to do a proper link with just a word... My first impresssion of the Brighton-themed piece is the softness of its harp and flute opening which suggested the dripping of raindrops.Hmm - dripping raindrops tinkling and twinkling?

An interesting week from Berlin in Afternoon on 3 this week: Rattle and the BPO in Borodin and Mussorgsky on Monday, presumably from the New Year concert recently released by EMI; the same forces in Delius on Tuesday; Massenet's Manon on Wednesday; Jansons conducting the BPO in Mahler 1 on Friday.
Also, the RSNO concert from Dundee that Ron went to, with Hilary Hahn playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, is broadcast on Monday evening.

Shameless plug coming up: a recent piece of mine, Unity for cello and piano, will be on R3 next Wednesday at 1pm. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/afternoonon3/pip/1vpcc/The musicians - Danjulo Ishizaka and Martin Helmchen are very good up-and-comers from Germany, so the rest of the concert should be of some interest too.

Unfortunatelty Stuart, Ive only seen this today. How did the performance go and what would you say your influences are? Would Messiaen or somebody sismilar, if anybody can be another Messiaen, that is??

The city is a process which always veers away from the form envisaged and desired, ... whose revenge upon its architects and planners undoes every dream of mastery. It is [also] one of the sites where Dasein is assigned the impossible task of putting right what can never be put right. - Rob Lapsley

The performance went fine - it was last summer! But the broadcast isn't until next week - the 20th - so you can listen and decide for yourself if you feel so inclined!

BBC4 - Friday 7th March, 20:00 - 21:00
Mozartballs
Light-hearted tribute to the composer, exploring what his timeless work symbolises in the modern age and uncovering the world of Mozart enthusiasts.
Apparently, the title "comes from an astronaut who took chocolate Mozartklugein into space" and "meets Wolfgangs oddest fans".
Sounds a right larf. Or something.
