I got home too late for Martle's World Prem but I caught up via Listen Again.  I enjoyed it.  Very stirring in places.  I would say it was far more interesting than the 'saviour of western classical music'  who followed on CotW, but I'm wary of damning with faint praise.  Will there be a commercial recording?

No plans for one, HtoHe. But thanks!

Who is Composer of the Week? John Tavener?

I've never heard anything by him. It's not real music, is it? I think I prefer John Tavener.

I liked From the Fairground of Dreams very much. I have no doubts that this is good music for orchestra.
I found it was beautiful and I enjoyed listening to it. I don't know what is the form of it, but seemed to me free form and we went through different moods.
I am not sure about Oswald Golijov. He has his own voice. It sounds Latin American at times, and at others it has strong Jewish sounding melodies.
I don't know what to make of him. I think his music will be appealing to young audience that is raised on Weber's musicals and pop bands.

I trust you mean (Lloyd-) Webber, t-p.  Some of Weber's musicals are pretty good.  I predict a bright future for 'Der Freischutz' !

Seriously, though, I found Tuesday night's offerings very boring and last night I had to turn off during the St Mark Passion excerpts.  I'm not averse to a bit of rock, or even pop, music myself and but for me this stuff lacked the spark and vitality that characterises good popular music.  I'm sure some people will like it but they'll be people on a different wavelength from mine.  The best analogy I can think of is that I can see the appeal of, say, reggae music but really can't get inside the skin of someone who can listen to hour after hour of it.   Likewise the various Latin styles.  But I'm afraid I got the impression that Golijov was sucking all the life out of whatever kind of music he was writing before presenting it for performance.  So, rather like Mr Lloyd-Webber, as you suggest; though the music itself didn't seem to have many similarities to any of L-W's pieces that I know.

I might give him another go tonight if I don't go to see Ian Bostridge but if it's not radically different from what I've heard already I might have to turn off again.

HtoHe,
I did mean Lloyd Webber, of course. If you will listen to Golijov tonight on Listen again see if you think it sounds like a musical when a singer sings. It sounds like Latin American Evita to me.
Last night (previous program) I thought one piece sounded like West side story music. I don't know, may be I am imagining.

No, I know what you mean.  It was sub-Bernstein in the same way as some of Tuesday night's stuff was sub-Ravel - perhaps what Daphnis & Chloe would have sounded like if Ravel wasn't such a good composer.

Ah well MJ, there`s always Listen Again. Unless you`re pulling these of course ...

Not pulling anyone's legs, Mort, amphibious or otherwise. Listening Again (but not again) now - sounds as though the orchestra's enjoying it, and I'm pleasantly surprised that it's not too weird  Wink for me.  Very colourful and twinkly isn't it? Shame it's such poor sound I'm receiving - some belches and hiccups. Serves me right for listening to the Archers...

Congratulations Mr Butler - fantastic stuff!   Cool

Hi MJ - and anyone else who missed or wants to listen again to Martin Butler's Fairground of Dreams

Here's a reasonably high quality mp3 (192 Mbps) - the file is 29MB. Link to download the file:

Please let me know if you can't get at it.

Thanks Andy - I managed to download it and then managed to find it (!) but stupid pc won't play it.  Angry I'll have to ask someone more techie-minded to help. But I think I've got it OK to listen to another time.  Kiss
