OK, so pumpkin hour isn't such an issue here for the time being. Still, I did always enjoy this thread.

For me at the moment it's Ferenc Sánta's CD of Csárdások on Naxos. Bonkers violin, clarinet and cimbalom solos and an accompaniment of wantonly sliding violas and basses. Rather splendid.

Beethoven 1 from Klemperer and the Philharmonia. Before that an exceptional Mahler 1 from Haitink and the Concertgebouw (the live Christmas matinee performances, rather than the studio ones, quite why these aren't more readily available is a mystery to me).

As previously announced elsewhere, I will mainly be listening to the Beethoven 'Cello Sonatas broadcast on Monday evening, tonight.

A CD of Vivaldi's violin concertos, L'estro Armonico op.3 nrs. 1 - 7.

I can't find any information about this CD on the web. It's on PILZ records, performed by the Camerata Romana, conducted by Eugen Duvier.

For me it's the wacko Hungarians again. Just keep coming back to that Magyar madness.

There's a lot to be said for the Csárdás as a form I think. A slow plaintive I've-lost-my-slivovits lament followed by a zany I've-found-my-slivovits-again knees-up. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm just working my way up to listening to the Maderna Mahler 9, first time with the CD recording although I have an ancient cassette of it somewhere. As I remember, the first movement is daringly slow. My music before the music before bedtime was orchestral music by franz Schreker. Beautifully opulent orchestration but without the harmonic sophistication of someone like Strauss.

You've intrigued me. I'd love to give this a try, but I can't seem to find it (I've tried the Naxos website - perhaps I'm being thick). Could you give me a steer? Cheers

Hungaraton are handled by Naxos in Japan, and maybe Australia too.

They do look lovely Bryn, and I'll have to give them a try. But the main one I've been listening to is this:

http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.550954
...the page contains a list of suppliers for various places.

There's also this one which I learnt about here - er, sorry, on the R3 message boards:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bartok-Album-Muzsikas/dp/B00000JZ15/sr=1-1/qid=1170973873/ref=sr_1_1/026-1375509-4135633?ie=UTF8&s=music
...it's quite different. Contains some of Bartók's field recordings.

Ah, http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_m_h_/202-5064725-2163806?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Csardas+Hungarian+Gypsy+Music&Go.x=6&Go.y=4

Just ordered the Caiman option. I hold you responible for any disappointment (or the obverse, of course). Wink

I haven't decided on tonight yet, but I felt I should report back on last night's MBB. I had the shock of my life when the applause started a few seconds after the end of the piece, not just because it was inevitably a hundred times louder than those last sounds, but principally because if I'd been at the concert I would have been sitting there with my mouth hanging open unable to move a muscle. Anyone expecting Maderna to have a similarly analytical attitude to his friend and colleague Boulez would be dead wrong, except in terms of making audible every line in every texture - the tempi are startlingly flexible and seemingly unpremeditated, and sometimes indeed there seem to be several tempi going at the same time (not quite sure what I mean by that), although what they add up into is a completely coherent and authentic view of the work. Anyone for whom this symphony has any importance (and for me there are no pieces which have more, and very few which have as much) ought to take the time to hear this recording through.

Just ordered it from Caiman. Same conditions apply to you as do to Ollie. ;-)
