Well I've just tuned in on TV and so far it's 9 minutes waffle, including repeat waffle from the sectional programme I've already seen.  With 2 hours to cover 5 finalists this bodes ill.

And they keep on referring to "tonight", which is deceptive, since this isn't live.

i think that the main reason that YMOY has gone down this route is that the bbc is convinced that most of its potential audience has the attention span of the mayfly - i suppose the idea of actually listening to a full work for half an hour or more is too horrific to contemplate when they could be viewing something more fulfilling like Strictly Come Dancing or Wife Swap....I am presently plowing thru YMOY - its all so pretty and cosy but so BOOOOOOOOOOOORING.......

My mother texted me to relate that people are complaining about it on Points of View.  I wonder what it will take for them to actually listen and do something about it in the future?

Yes, there are two threads (at least) over at POV. I don't know if anyone at the BBC reads POV MBs.

A most interesting point, offbeat, because I've noticed that, ironically, my attention has been straying throughout the broadcast - even in the bits where the artists are performing.  That isn't my normal mode - I listened intently and uninterruptedly through all of Salome last night.  I can only put it down to the format of the programme, which seems positively to discourage concentration.

Was that an example of Mark Simpson’s skills as a composer we just heard?  He has a piece on the programme at St George’s Hall on Wednesday but it’s an oboe piece so it won’t be the same.  I think I’ll get myself a ticket if they’re still available when I go to the Box Office tomorrow.  It looks interesting:

I see the young trombonist won.  I enjoyed what I heard of his performance and I'm glad because I think the trombone is an unfairly neglected instrument

I didn't hear who composed the clarinet piece.

I'd have given the award to the guitarist, myself - and I'm not even keen on guitars. The trombonist is undoubtedly a phenomenon, though, and I agree about the trombone being rather neglected. My son used to play it.

The young trombonist who played in the concert we went to last night was one of the finalists in the competition.  He was very good too.

Feedback is back on radio 4; you could have a mass-complain to them.

'Course, all that would probably happen would be an interview with the YMotY producer, who would tell you why he is right and you're all wrong. But it might be worth a try   Roll Eyes

Here, in Wales, on S4C we have Llyr Williams, accompanied by Sinfonia Cymru conducted by Gareth Jones, performing Mozart's Concerto No. 23 in A.

What a joy it is, to be Welsh sometimes, and with our own television station look you!

Although the trombone is a bit of a cinderella solo instrument, there are now some contemporary concertos to choose from. Contrast with the guitar; "enthusiastic" conductor to expectant finalist, "oh, so you want to play the Rodrigo then ?"

I lost the will to live during the course of tonight's final, banal in the extreme. The most infuriating thing was that we saw enough in the snippets through the week to realise that there is plenty of worthwhile talent out there but it wasn't allowed to show itself. On Friday there is the Eurovision Young Musician contest from Vienna on BBC4. Since it will be a bought in broadcast it will be interesting to compare the format and content.

Ok Anty but note, the BBC2 Young Person's shambles was courtesy of BBC Wales.

Well, the fiasco may have been due to BBC Wales, but remember they also produce Doctor Who!

S4C, the Welsh channel to which I referred is nothing to do with the BBC at all.  Sianel Pedwar Cymru, (meaning Channel Four Wales) is a television channel for Wales. Nowt to do with the BBC  at all!  And all the better for it.  I have had an evening of choirs, classical music, sheep dog trials and rugby.  Ahh!  What could be better?

I thought the choice of person to present the actual award was one of the most insulting aspects of the televised 'final'. Which respected, world-class musician did they pick to announce the winner of this prestigious award? Er, the BBC's own Director of Television, Jana Bennett!!!! Extraordinary. They couldn't even been bothered to find a musician, or at least someone respected in the industry. They had to choose one of their own, as if to say 'hey, the BBC is entirely responsible for this competition so let us have our moment in the spotlight.'

I hope Jana gets to see all the complaints about her coverage of this event - she is, after all, ultimately responsible.

The Sunday broadcast was a disgrace and I shall be writing about it on my blog again today. I notice Points of View did feature some complaints yesterday, by the way.
