Hmf, that's only half a cryptic clue in my book Wink

(Which in no way lessens Tony's achievement!)

A complete cryptic clue comprises a definition of the word as a whole as well as the cryptic bits.  Because "Scent in two articles" only refers to the bits you stick together, and not to what the whole answer means, it's only half.  A complete clue would be something like "Martyr's scent in two articles."

Of course, most people over here would be wondering what Theodoura is...

You can have undefined clues if it's part of a general theme that's explained elsewhere (usually cryptically).

Oh sorry, forgot this isn't the picture association thread.

For anyone who can't see that, it's a vampire's crypt Lego set.  Seriously.

There it is - see?  Told you so.   Smiley

[This must appear rather forced, amateurish, and no doubt easy too, because it is our first attempt ever:]

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order! (10)

No, it is not hyperbaton. That is a case where the proposed solution is rather more difficult than the original clue and certainly more difficult than the correct answer; only after considerable research do we begin to see - but even now but dimly - how the Member may have arrived at it!

Then we had better start gradually giving letters away lest it become embarrassing. Only one to-day though.

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order! (10)

I thought there might be a lute in there, but all I can think of is absolutely and resolutely. Asbo-lutely would describe a lack of order, if there were such a word.

[Sorry for the delay - it has been difficult to get through again.]

I thought there might be a lute in there, but all I can think of is absolutely and resolutely. Asbo-lutely would describe a lack of order, if there were such a word.

Well do we give it to Mr. Watson? He had three goes in one, and he does not sound very confident, but the fact remains that one of his goes is correct. And since it is a sort of crossword it is the end result that counts not the path taken to arrive at it. So he is right but hardly absolutely may we say.

Here if any one is interested is our own thought process:

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order!
     O Lute!

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order!
     O Lute lee -> ly

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order!
O Lute ly Abs (see below)

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order!
     Abs O Lute ly

We hear that after calling for an instrument and taking shelter, they began holding his belly - but that's quite out of order!
     Absolutely

"Abs" (n. plu.) is for us a new word; we learned it only last week! It signifies, apparently, the six muscles that hold the abdomen; and they when prominent are often we gather the object (or should that be subject?) of up-to-date ladies' admiration!

I have heard somewhere that it does not suffice for them to be merely prominent:

They must rather be well-defined:

We can perhaps confide that our own condition in this department is somewhere between the two extremes.

Please, Mr Grew, another!
