Correct (Archduke)!

Here's a much harder one:

Symptom of drunkenness on monarch carrying an emblem of freedom makes for absolutist (8 ).

Seeing as nobody's had a stab at this I'll guess 'Hickling'.

But it's a wild guess and would be in part based on there being an absolutist of that name, that google doesn't know about. Either that or a verb 'to hickle', which would be nice if there was.

Hickling would be 'Hic' followed by 'king' holding an 'l'.

So it gets my vote!

Didn't notice this before - both you and Daniel are in the right sort of direction, but it's the wrong answer.

Hmmm - still no luck on Ian's or MT Wessel's.

But here's some fresh ones to get you going.  All Composer Surnames, and I'll leave out the letters for fun.

1. A letter away from making a shepherd happy at bedtime
2. use another's noise
3. Landlord gets a boxing win amidst messy chives (not eastern)
4. About....  About that Gammon....  About....  left?
5. Skilled labourer, metalworker, changes a compass point
6. Cooker for edible roots - hard inside
