Rachmaninoff has a song called Twilight. I am looking at it now. I have a first volume of his songs. I don't know this song. It is dedicated to Vrubel (a painter I suppose). It is for soprano or tenor. I think the words suit tenor better, because of the female endings. (Men use different endings when they speak). The words are translation of Guyot into Russian and then the whole thing is translated into English.
Alone and lost in dreams she sits beside her open sindow with drooping head as twilight lowly falls. Then gazes up to Heav'n, where night is slowly gathring to veil the boundless blue and as the stars semble, the wide celestial vault to light in radiant gleam. And as I turn my gaze towards this vision pure, in secret it would seem as tho a crown of jewels upon her tresses lay, stargilding them with silver.
The whole Romance is two pages for the piano (short).

I really like Rachmaninov songs, t-p. Dmitri Hvorostovsky has recorded quite a few and usually includes them in his recitals, as does that other admirable baritone, Sergei Leiferkus. My favourite is 'Ne poj, krasavitsa, pri mne' usually translated as 'Let me not hear you sing' Op.4 No.4, which is so haunting.

On to another connections challenge...what links these four?

Tchaikovsky
Purcell
Beethoven
Khachaturian

I have to think about that, but I know for sure that Sabre Dance doesn't link them.

Mr tp is singing the song Ne poi, krasavitsa pri mne" all day. It is very famous in Russia. Don't sind my beautiful for me the songs of Georgia (My translation). They remind me another country and a far away coast. This songs were written in Chechen somewhere, because the poet was send there.

Sorry, but the songs send me memory lanes. I am going to try new challenge.

Definitely no Sabre Dance in this one!

I'm sure you find the Rachmaninov songs even more moving with the connections to your homeland and your past, t-p. Never worry about a trip down memory lane...sometimes we need a good wallow.  Smiley

No fairies, Tommo. Can't imagine what a Khachaturian fairy would sound like...probably thundering across the stage to the accompaniment of a full battery of percussion!
