I sense you're struggling with this one, so here's an extra composer to lead you forward...

Beethoven
Ibert
Henze
Suppé
Birtwistle

I keep on thinking about country matters - peasants, pastoral? The pastoral symphony from Handel's Messiah?

I really must get out of my pyjamas and get outside, even though it's raining!

The best part of a week has elapsed since we first read these words, and yet they still worry us strangely . . .

Good thinking, Tony, but nothing pastoral in this case. I reckon the extra composer here could well give the game away to leave me defeated.

Beethoven
Ibert
Henze
Suppé
Birtwistle
Handel
Lord Berners

Birtwistle - Triumph of Time
Ibert - Triumph of Chastity
Handel - Triumph of Time and Truth
Henze - L'Upupa Und Der Triumph Der Sohnesliebe
Suppe - Triumph Overture
Beethoven - Leonore, oder Der Triumph der ehelichen Liebe

A complete triumph, martle!! I had a feeling the Berners wasn't a good move!

Have you seen the Henze? There's a superb DVD which had me completely spellbound.

Apologies for the delay...very late evening marking/assessing in a very cold classroom... Angry

No, IGI. Details? I have a classic love/hate relationship with HWH's music, but am always ready to give him a go. (Remember having a VERY long love affair with 'Voices' (1973) - one of the best song cycles of the C20th in my view.)

Happy to oblige, m:

I know very little Henze, although I did follow a recommendation here and got 'Ode to the West Wind' which I found quite beautiful in places. I think I should explore the symphonies at some point.

Symphonies 3, 4 and 6 are particularly good I think. I found L'Upupa musically disappointing after some of his other operas, particularly Elegy for Young Lovers.

Thanks, Richard. I've ordered the discs with Nos.1-6 on.

A new quiz for the weekend. Connect these four:

Ralph Vaughan Williams
Alfred Newman
Ferruccio Busoni
Gustav Holst

Absolutely agree IGI, the L'Upupa dvd had me transfixed from start to end, well worth renting out.
