Could the Rameau be the 'Rigadoun' from Dardanus, and the Suppé be the Overture to 'Pique Dame'? Wink

No to all the Bliss, Suppé and Rameau suggestions. Sorry.

And the Bliss be 'March of homage in honour of a Great Man', or one of countless other works for that type of instrumentation?

Will do, Dan. I'll check in as soon as I return.

In the meantime, here's an extra composer before I go now..Gounod (sorry for the pun!)

Apparently those two huge crossing swords that used to adorno Baghdad were made in Basingstoke - was IGI at all responsible? I think we should be told......

Er, Ian, are you sure about this? Or is it a forgiveable typo after too many hours connecting?  Wink

Good evening all. Basingstoke is still in one piece, despite the efforts of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra’s percussion department to raze it to the ground! Thrilling, totally unsubtle Mussorgsky Pictures, plus the Khachaturian Lezghinka as a second encore, where the conductor strolled off after the downbeat, leaving the orchestra to it, led by an energetic, enthusiastic, rather elderly female side-drummer, who duly came to the conductor’s podium at the end to take her bow!!

Time for another composer plus extra clues…the Gounod is operatic, the Rameau a keyboard piece and the Telemann a cantata.

Elgar – Imperial March
Walton
Rameau
Schubert – Marche militaire
Berlioz - Royal Hunt and Storm ‘The Trojans’
Telemann
Suppé
Bliss
Gounod
Francaix

Hello roslyn,

Oui to Gounod.
Non to Francaix.

So you've earned a plus...you've guessed it....an extra composer:

Handel

No other Sheba connection here, so Respighi won't be making an appearance in my (long) line-up!

Time for one more composer clue before I finish for the evening...never fear, I have ten more left!!  Smiley

Elgar – Imperial March
Walton
Rameau
Schubert – Marche militaire
Berlioz - Royal Hunt and Storm ‘The Trojans’
Telemann
Suppé
Bliss
Gounod – La reine de Saba
Francaix
Handel
Vaughan Williams

How did you guess?!  (Only joking!)

This is proving a bit tricky...most of the pieces are really well known, but the pieces identified so far have led folks into looking for a royal/ imperial connection which isn't actually there.
