I was thinking along similar lines but then couldn't see why 'Septet' was difficult So gave up .

You are all very much on the right track. Once you have the principle, you must do a bit of digging. Turfers, if I read you aright, we're not looking for works, are we. There's some sort of pattern in that list of composers, and the blanks fit it. Right?
No (you are!) and yes (there is and they do).

For 5, are we looking at Elgar's 5 Pomp & Circumstance Marches?

Mmmm, does that mean the Elgar is correct or that you've succeeded in foxing us?! Rachmaninov wrote 9 op.39 Études-Tableaux.

I suspect we're looking for numbers of things certain composers wrote? So, if 1 is Chopin, an example of a work he only wrote one of, so the Cello Sonata springs to mind. 2 = Beethoven: 2 violin Romances?

Colder, in a way. Chopin wrote four of the things that put him on this list. Do give people a chance, now, hear?

This observation is very precise, but, I suspect, for the wrong reason.

Chopin wrote four of the things that put him on this list. But only one of them interests us!

Could you indicate, turfers, which guesses so far are actually correct?

Elgar is correct.
Rachmaninov is correct.
Oh now the cat's no longer in the bag is it? So hard to tell if I'm giving away the farm or not.
Four Impromptus also, not that it necessarily matters.
I certainly don't mean to frustrate you -- the agony is worth it, I assure you. (That's not a clue, no)

So, if individual items of sets are set apart, is it that they also exist in other versions - with words, perhaps?

Sets are not taken apart at all. Words have naught to do with it, though some works contain text. Ohh I admit this is an enormous amount of fun, and I can just see your smiles when you've got it figured out.
