So - the day is here. Not so feasible for us heavy smokers to quite in one fell swoop, so it is to be done in stages. Rule I'm setting for myself - begin by not smoking in the house (starting from 7pm this evening), go outside when one is needed - that way I'll smoke a lot less. Leave my ashtrays on a high shelf somewhere. Lots of coffee, lots of liquids in general, getting engrossed in things to take one's mind off smoking. Want to be down to no more than 20 a day within two weeks (from 40-50 a day). Anyone else (martle?) planning to take stopping smoking seriously, and care to share experiences here?

Ooooh, why did you have to pick on me?! Not sure I can do it straight off, although I've been doing some mental preparation... Your fine example may spur me though, Ian. Good luck! And post regular reports. One thing - if you're serious, chuck the ashtrays entirely, hmm?  Wink

(I have a feeling I'm one of those smokers who's going to have to do it all in one, cold turkey. This is judging from my past attempts!)

Bravi, chaps! Wish you all the best with it.

(I haven't managed to help anyone kick the things since a 4-5 year old Ollie used to hide Mother Sudden's ciggies in the garden. And even if that did help I think it was probably more through my mere presence than through any of my actions. So never fear, any contributions from me will be confined to generalised moral support. Well, martle, what would you say to the idea of a night (not Monday week, another later date) of getting totally pissed whilst seeing if we can both go the whole evening either with no cigarettes at all, or a very low number (2-4, say, for which we'd obviously have to pop outside). Might be a good exercise, as long as neither of us turns into a homicidal maniac as the night wears on... Wink

A challenge! I could probably handle that. Might have to put in some training beforehand, though...  Sad

I don't know if this will be any help, but my husband told me that a few years  before he met me he was a very heavy smoker, in fact he used to light one from another.  60 a day.  He decided to give up purely because he couldn't afford it any more.  He said that cutting down was useless and that in the end the only way he could do it was just to stop completely.  He had a couple of weeks' hell but then never touched another cigarette ever.  It takes an enormous amount of willpower and not everyone has the strength of mind to do it of course, but might it be worth having a go?  Throw out all the ashtrays and the cigarettes?  He also said that he put the money aside that he would have spent and was absolutely shocked at the amount he'd saved after 12 months.  That was years ago when cigarettes were nothing like the price they are now.

I wish you all luck.  Smiley

That's how several of my friends stopped smoking, too - they just stopped.

Well, a mere two cigarettes since 7 pm (and both smoked outside) - that's not bad at all for me. Nice Chinese take-out on the way to distract any cigarette-cravings.... Smiley

Rock on Ian (or maybe wok on in this case)!

When I gave up, I just sort of let the numbers gradually dwindle down to nothing. Worked for me.

Keep going, Ian! Chinese take-out sounds like a good compensation factor.

I was thinking, isn't it strange how people used to inordinate amounts of self-discipline in work-related departments of their lives (composing, practicing, rehearsing, performing) have the same amount of trouble as others when it comes to this? I speak for myself really, since, unlike Ian, I've not taken the leap, quite.  Sad

Speaking from personal experience (albeit from so long ago I can hardly now remember it), this is indeed the most effective way...

Best,

I'm managing - only had one more ciggy since last posting. Mind you, it might not be the best idea to start posting pictures of men with axes, as can be seen on another thread........ Shocked
