Is there any other sufficient response, other than 'that's nice dear'?

Some people have far too much time on their hands!

Aargh! I've just thought of a smutty riposte!

Scene: A room with whitewashed walls, two beds and a washbasin. There is a heavy oak door (shut) and a thin window through which moonlight can be seen to offer the only illumination in the room. There are two people lying on the beds (one on each). PERSON is lying on his or her back looking at the ceiling. OTHER PERSON is lying facing the wall on his or her side, apparently asleep.

PERSON: Someone asked me today if I'd ever considered whether I was going to die alone.
OTHER PERSON: [grunt]
PERSON: Oh. I don't remember. He had a hat.
OTHER PERSON: [grunt (same pitch)]
PERSON: I hadn't really thought about it before but now it's really bothering me.
OTHER PERSON: [grunt (slightly lower)]
PERSON: Yes. [pause] People talk about how terrible it is to die alone but when it comes down to it, I suppose we all die alone. Or if our death is publicised enough in advance, one can die surrounded by family.
OTHER PERSON: [rolls over to look at PERSON]
PERSON: It occurred to me then that it's not so much dying alone that bothers me. [pause] It's living alone.
OTHER PERSON: [rolls over to face wall]
PERSON: [Gets up off bed and walks towards the door. Takes key out of pocket and unlocks door. Opens and walks through door shutting it behind him or herself.]
[The sound of a key turning is heard.]
OTHER PERSON: [grunt (original pitch)]

By the time the villagers reached him it was too late.
He was lying on his back shaking uncontrollably, his eyes wide open and bulging, his skin frighteningly pale.
His tongue was swollen but he was repeating the same word over and over again.
As they carried him to their village, he grew weaker but the repetition continued unabated.
Even decades later, the villagers who carried him that day could recall that word instantly.
The individual that I questioned as part of my research flinched as he related the story.
He lowered his voice and leaned forward, looking me straight in the eye as he hissed that single word that had been burnt into his long-term memory: 'katasmagoria'.
I never saw him again.
