Just a guess, Mary, but probably the latter: (cognate with podgy?)
Good to see you out of the Grump Room this morning!

Thanks, Ron. I do feel a bit better, even though I'm looking out of the window at steadily pouring rain, and birds sitting in trees looking utterly miserable.

I'm happy but feeling absolutely podged. Podged is a lovely word. I don't think I've ever heard it before. Does it mean tired, or full of food? Full of food. As in podgy. I still feel full this morning! I had smoked haddock fishcakes and salad to start and then this huge halibut steak with veg. I really don't know why they have to serve such huge portions. No wonder so many people are overweight. I had one of the most "slimming" dishes I suppose although this wasn't intentional, but I watched around the restaurant and people were eating huge side bowls of chips as well as big plates of cream-enriched sauce-covered delights and then ordering great creamy desserts. It actually put me off just watching them. I couldn't even finish my cappuccino afterwards. I think my problem in restaurants is that I don't eat 3 big meals a day, I seem to have about 5 very small ones and to eat a huge amount at night after 9 p.m. just doesn't suit me.

I assume that haddock fishcakes, salads, halibut steaks and veggies remain among the few consumables that one may still legitimately smoke in enclosed public spaces then?

I have the same problems with big meals as Milly does, especially late at night.
One thing that makes me smile in a sad sort of way is the sight of fat people in restaurants (or more particularly pubs) eating huge amounts of food. Don't they ever look in a mirror? Don't they care?

They didn't seem to care Mary. They all looked very happy indeed in fact. Perhaps the reason is that everywhere they look they see people in a similar condition and this has taken away the worry of it? At one time, sadly I have to say, if a person was obese it was unusual and people stared and commented. I don't think that happens nearly as much nowadays because of the sheer numbers of them in the same boat. It seems to be slimmer people that are stared at now. As to looking in mirrors, perhaps that doesn't matter now either? I personally think a waistline looks much more attractive, but clothing now does cater for much bigger people and it's easier for them to look much better than in previous generations. Then of course we come down to the obvious health issues, but again, they looked healthy enough on the face of it. All the same if they had to run for their lives there'd be a problem - but that is unlikely nowadays.

It is amazing that restaurants seem to serve portions that are either too large or too small. I'm one of those incredibly annoying people who can (to some extent) eat as much as I like without worrying about putting on weight (actually it can be the opposite way round... but see Happy Room) so a visit to a restaurant is often a nice excuse to stuff my face. Quite agree about the timing of meals. I'm hopeless if I eat after 9.

My daughter makes me smile She's an assistant manager at a posh cocktail bar/restaurant in Brum. After meeting some old work colleagues on Thursday (at a Weatherspoon) the missus and I drove a couple blocks and popped up to her bar. We'd got to about six foot front the glass door whe she dashed out "You can't come in like that!" Such a snob, turns her own parents away from the restaurant I was dressed in designer jeans, but those sort of faded/frayed ones, and a Nike hoodie, yeah I'm a bit old for a hoodie but it's so comfortable. My missus had black trousers and an old tight cardigan and because her hair had got wet it was like a Goth's Scruffs! .

As do I. I think it's a leftover (haha) from when I used to suffer terribly with digestive problems. Anything about 8.30 or later, I can't even manage a mouthful without feeling ill - although if I am very relaxed at home, I can usually manage something. It seems to happen a lot when I eat out with friends which is really annoying. Anyway, all good fun!
