Know what you mean, GG, about the shore: but for me it really is the sea herself, and the moods of her marriage to the sun and sky.

Foula. Did you call, George? Glad to see that "Edge of the World" (1937) is due for an imminent release on DVD. I'll take a stroll in the direction of the film thread in due course.

I used to live by the sea. For me it is the sheer power of the waves that is magic. This is Skrinkle Haven, Pembrokeshire

There's lovely. I have stood many times on that selfsame place. Although here is a weirdly similar one I took in New South Wales.

Rob G,
The pictures bring so many memories. We did not live exactly where you took the pictures, but close enough.
I have to say, that I appreciate the weather in CA much more now than I did then. Believe it or not I was tired of blue sky and wanted to see at least one cloud. I was tired of palm trees and I wanted trees to drop their leaves.
The sea was beautiful. For surfers it is a paradize. We lived closes to Newport Beach. I have pictures from those times.
Waves were so big, I never saw waves like that because it is an ocean and not the sea.
Thank you for posting your pictures. Do you have other pictures?
I like Pembrokeshire too. I thought that Aberystwyth was the beautiests place on earth. But we did not travel much. We were always busy. It is a pity.

Ta Ants. There's lovely indeed. That beach looks ENORMOUS! Ah, I can almost see myself wandering along it, feeling the sand between my toes. Then in my shoes, my clothes, my hair ... Seriously, it looks gorgeous. I bemoan the lack of beaches in Highgate. Sigh.

And then, of course, staying in same neck of the woods, there is Oxwich Bay. How totally thrilling to think that not only Lord Barrett of Abertawe's Doc Martens have trodden the self same sod as myself at Rhossili but mayhap our footsteps have even crossed here!

And since the young Ron stayed at the Worm's Head Hotel in 1960 and 61, he too has trod Rhossili a few times.....

<swoon thud> the thought of tracing richard's and Ron's footfalls is quite spooky. I will now clutch me Doc Martens to me bosom and whisper love songs Frivolous - Moi? But seriously, Wales has some very good beaches and some of the most spectacular scenary in Europe (Oh, did I say I work for the Welsh Tourist Board?)

The cameras have hardly seen the light of day for weeks, but it was brighter today, so I did a run of my normal haunts en route to performing an errand. Whilst visiting my favourite trees, this little feller obligingly stopped long enough for me to get a half-decent snap: the first peacock I've seen this year. And how are the trees themselves? Fine - and the heather's gae bonny up on Carrot Hill....

A picture from our week in Devon. Berry Head.
A delightful photograph Madame A! What a memorable holiday it must have been! Here we do not reside close enough to it to be worried by sand, but we are indeed perched upon a hill above the sea, and enjoy a wide view thereof extending to a hundred and seventy angular degrees. The chief advantage of these (the height and the angle) is that every day of the year we may look out of our kitchen window and see the curvature of the earth. The chief disadvantage is of course all the dreadful gales of wind we have to endure; sometimes they are so strong as to render it inadvisable to put out the rubbish-bin! And we are reminded too are not we of Charles Arrowby who retires from his glittering London world in order to abjure magic and become a hermit in a sea-side cottage - and of how he is nevertheless troubled by the arrival of his Buddhist cousin James and a monster from the deep (all this in Iris Murdoch's great novel of course). I am glad you like it Mr Grew, it was indeed a good holiday. I am envious of your view however, I would give a lot to be able to see the sea in all its majesty as you can. As for saving your rubbish bin from the stormy blasts and wind, we have to do that sometimes in South East London too !! It is a long time since I read 'The Sea, The Sea' but I am very fond of Iris Murdoch's books and remember this one fondly. To be a hermit by the sea is often very appealing I must say ! A

That picture of a butterfly is beautiful. I like bright spots that look like eyes.
