I know someone who was "accentless" in that they spoke pretty much Home Counties, then went to Uni in Lancashire, where they developed a Northern twang, still live up there and now you would think they had been Salford born and bred!  I'm pretty sure this was caused by comments that they spoke "posh" and with a "plum in their mouth" so it was a question of fitting in.

Our infant children developed an American accent while we were there for two years; it stayed for a few months.

My own accent is still clearly Scottish, but after 30 years south of the border it's more Connery than Rab C. Unfortunately my lacking of a suntan makes me look more Rab C than Connery - but I do have Connery hair Cheesy
