...anyway, judging by the tenor of his article it seems as if the recipe for success being put forward is for orchestras to abandon classical music and play arrngements of pop, folk and jazz tunes instead.

arrngement: abbrev. for "arrangement" when applied to the reworking of any piece of tonal music that specifically avoids a repetition of the key of A (either major or minor).

Following on from George's "toadmire", I was reminded of the bill of fare that was sent to us all electronically some months ago; sent to us all, but clearly only intended for a select few:

Surely not - isn't this more "accurate"?...

I could be getting a more challenging job, where I work, a promotion if you will. Things seem to be comiing in thick and fast. Like the buses!!

comiing: gerund (from "to comy") meaning "participating in the Conference of Messianic Yisrael".

Though it does offer me the opporunity to publically celebrate the return, after some 21 years, of my copy of Cage (and Knowles's) "Notations"

Opporunity (N): The indisoluble bond between Anglo-Saxon military scribes.

Publically (N): Friend who supports one openly.

Now Spinning: a redemptive encore presentation of Michael Tippett's Concerto for Orchestra. I do indeed find it very much to my liking. But a little concerned that I am not hearing something particularly characteristic of Tippett (not that that reduces my enjoyment). What is the tippical Tippett?

tippical:  referring to the visible portion of an iceberg

Ron, I must take issue with your second definition. Why would the person aligning with one have to be a friend? Wink
