What a beautifully presented set is the Hyperion Bantock 6CD set. Just put on the Sappho CD and I'm already in a dreamy dramatic land/time. The prelude was beautiful, the vocal tracks are astonishing (Susan Bickley).

The Complete Mozart set from Brilliant (170 CDs) from someone who didn't know I already had the Philips set. But I shall have a lot of fun exploring these. Like similar sets, the notes, libretti and biographies are on a CD rom, which is quite understandable. But without wanting to appear ungrateful, a searchable index would be a useful addition.

Musical presents for me were Britten and the Far East, one of the few books about BB I hadn't got, from a very unlikely person who couldn't possibly have known I hadn't got it, Mark Padmore As Steals the Morn, the 1940s Pears/Britten/Boyd Neel On Wenlock Edge, and 3 Paul Lewis Beethoven CDs.

We had a few duplicated presents, like the QI Annual, and three copies of the same book on mushrooms, but they were redistributed happily to whoever hadn't got one.

Which particular book on mushrooms, Mary?

I didn't realise you were that fond of Cage. Wink

Learn how to deal with those unwanted presents: How to receive a goat (and other unglamorous gifts)
From that link:
Many people didn't heed the requests, but my 'main' present was clean drinking water for 150 people. It was the most emotional present I'd ever had and I still well up when I think about it now.

MabelJane, Whad do you mean you got clean drinking water for 150 people? Does it mean someone dug a well.
I am perplexed.

Far too long ago now, there was an excellent Channel 4 series, "Mushroom Magic". The woodlands around here excellent for forays. Lots of Ceps, etc. Antonio Carluccio's "The Complete Mushroom Book: The Quiet Hunt", is well worth getting.

My son ordered a boxed set CD from Amazon for me (the Bantock set).

Not arrived  Sad

I TAKE BACK the grump Amazon, well done! The CDs arrived last week but my missus wrapped and hid them!  Cheesy - and let me grump on and on about non-delivery  Smiley

My daughter is rather shocked at the two nude sirens on the cover, she's not convinced about the contents till I play them.

Glad this arrived, John, as I can see from your new avatar too. I'm in a bit of a quandary about that box; I'd previously bought three of the Hyperion discs singly, so am loathed to buy the same discs again, but if I spot the set going cheap I could be tempted. Otherwise, it's going to be a question of finding the other three titles at reasonable prices. What's the documentation like in the box set?

My presents included a camera bag for my new Canon which will be put to good use, as will the little wooden stand/tree for drying homemade pasta!  Smiley

T-p, I was quoting from that webpage you reach when you click on Andy's link:

Yes, you can give clean drinking water as a gift through a charity such as Oxfam. You pay a certain amount towards digging and maintaining a well and they give you a gift card for you to send someone - so in effect you're telling your friend/relative that you have bought something for people in a 3rd world country instead of buying them a (Christmas) gift. Some people love this idea and welcome the gift card in lieu of the present you could have bought them. Others dislike the whole concept. I personally think it's a good idea as long as you do it for someone who would appreciate it.

It was the unintentional (I think) pun on the word "well" that amused me... Smiley

Yes that is understandable. I had recorded just a little of the Bantock CotW but that was enough to get me interested (I also have an old Marco Polo CD, only the Hebridean is duplicated)

14 pages in English of which 5 pages are the words to the songs, mainly written by wife Helen. I would say about 5000 words of notes, so a good read.

It's a good biography with quotes from Bantock's diary and reference to BBC interviews that were preserved, explanations about the delays and years of composition for some works (some written before/during WWI were not heard till after the war) and some lengthy explanations about the meaning/purpose of the works which I've not yet digested - so the notes are excellent and need some study.
