I was given Musicophilia (t-p's book!) too and am about halfway through it; it is an occasionally thought-provoking read, written by someone who clearly loves a fairly traditional range of music (although his reference to 'one of Beethoven's violin concertos' irritated me hugely), working with patients who also have fairly traditional tastes. I couldn't help wondering how he would deal with the brains on here who have a more, shall we say, extended (!) range of definitions of music; and it would be fascinating indeed to get some of these brains analysed as they experience it!  Wink

There is a good chapter on absolute pitch which touches on some problems of my own which I mentioned when there was a flourishing thread on the subject some months back. In fact, I might dig that out and resurrect it...

Why would that be? What about the discarded early one in C major, which has come down to us incomplete? Wink

I'm the Coffee addict in our house so very pleasantly surprised that my daughter bought me a Morphy-Richards Espresso machine!  Smiley

Makes normal coffee as well as the frothy milk variants  Grin

Currently addicted to a Costa Rican blend (Whitworth's of Chelsea). At least it means I'm drinking less wine while on this long holiday break at home. Missus isn't ecstatic as she doesn't like the smell of coffee.

I've always thought the smell of coffee is much nicer than the taste!

I feel the same, Mary!  I like coffee but somehow the taste never measures up to the promise of the smell. It`s an olfactory tease! Roll Eyes

When in doubt, wash.

Me too!  Grin
This is how it should be done:

Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative.

Yarrgghh, the cups look a bit dirty!  Roll Eyes

two other weaknesses of mine, satisfied at Christmas, on the table here

Dark chocolate brandy liqueurs

Thornton's Turkish Delight (pistachio, almond and hazelnut flavour)

Oh and, courtesy of our local Polish shop, bags of Lay's potato chips (crisps) a very tasty brand seen in US and Europe but not in UK (?)

Whereas I don't mind the smell of tobacco, might have the odd puff on a cigarette once a year or so and otherwise can't stand the pong of the things...

Cigars are lovely; still haven't had one since ~2.00am in our local that fateful evening  Cool

My missus doesn't like the smell of cigars either but she always bought me a pack or two at Christmas, until this year  Sad but the brandy liqueurs are an acceptable replacement

My Christmas presents included (from my mum) the Nederlandse Opera DVD of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk with Jansons conducting and Eva-Maria Westbroek in the title role  Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin I don't remember asking her for it, but apparently I did! Haven't watched it yet but am a v. happy bunny.

I haven't managed to watch the ROH Carmen yet on account of my mum's TV aerial breaking down on Christmas Day.  I've got it on the PVR though, so might sit down with it on New Year's Day.  Tonight is of course La fille du regiment!

Not really a Christmas present, my brother last week e-mailed me all the fruits of his family tree researches, for both sides of the family, and I've had fun drawing out family trees by hand.

We had a good start with a big old family bible which had Wright family data written on blank pages by my dad's dad and his dad, going back to 1830, and the Wrights back to then were all born in Scotland (Dumfries area). My brother, subscribing to an ancestry site with parish records, marriage certs. and gravestone info, soon confirmed our suspicions, that the earlier Wrights (pre-1830) were English  Shocked

Well, of course, with a name like Wright that should not come as a shock. So he has traced the direct ancestor Wrights (in the Carlisle area) back to 1750. Doing google searches picks out the Wright surname in many villages in that area in the 19thC (e.g. POLICE records!) but none of them match the dates of our direct ancestors, though in all likelihood some are distantly related  Roll Eyes

Our old family were simple village folk, some with their own business, some working on big country estates (for the family of Thomas Carlyle is one example). One sad thing is the high rate of infant mortality which I suppose was normal in those days, even one great-great-uncle giving up after all four children died under age of three.

But good to see so many of the menfolk lived to over 80, and with that we are fortunate to have many photos of white-bearded men taken 1904-1912

Much bigger families on my mum's side to tackle.

What I meant was none of the police records or recorded instances of Wrights' poaching or committing manslaughter matched dates/ages for our ancestors  Cheesy But Googling DOES bring up gravestone data in villages which match our data from other parish records and censuses. I've caught the ancestry bug this week for sure  Roll Eyes

Really enjoying my coffeee this week. I like MUGS of coffee, not those little doll's house cups. Just as well I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, the lovely machine above makes six 'cups' max - enough for one half-pint MUG!  Cheesy
