I'm just in the process of burning Ubuntu to disk (fingers crossed simultaneously).

Go for it incy!
Installing as we speak.  I maybe wasn't as careful about backing stuff up as I maybe might have been, but no music lost, and likewise all creative efforts are backed up elsewhere*, so nothing I can't download again should I really want to.  Mmmmclean slates.

Oh drat: I've just thought of a thing (the first of several no doubt) I should have backed up that I didn't.  Angry

EDIT: Installing now, for a second time (messed up some options the first time, wouldn't you know...).

My computer had to go to hospital the other week - it had got stuck in a boot-loop.  All fixed, no probs, but somehow my settings must have been changed because I cannot stay logged in to any of the sites I use and my homepage (BBC) everytime I log in has reverted back to London as location, etc., and I have to reset and save but it doesn't retain the settings.

I have checked my firewall and all the sites I allow are still there and my internet settings appear to be the same as I have at work.  Obviously a box somewhere has been checked or unchecked re cookies.  Any ideas?  It's not important in one way but just a bit of a pain.

Definitely sounds like your cookies aren't getting saved Anty but I don't know enough about IE (which I assume you're using) to advise.

Andy, I am on IE (same as at work) but another thing that has changed is that when I had images I could hover over them and get the option of save,  email, etc., but now I don't get that either  Huh  I have to right click and save now.

Anna,

Something like that happened to me last year and it's recorded in this thread somewhere, favourites aren't saved etc etc. Damaged Windows XP User Profile is what it was, might have been Ron who found the fix for me. All I had to do in the end was use the User Login facility on the PC (which we'd never used) so I became John W on my own PC (the faulty profile is still there re-named xxxxx to avoid opening it).

Later I also had another IE problem, can't remember what, and on that occasion I used the Internet Options > Advanced > Reset Internet Explorer Settings which doesn't lose much and you soon get back to normal.

A word to the boffins here. Is is possible that, although I unplugged my cable modem before installing my wireless hub, the cable modem could  be affecting my wireless connection?  Do I need to tell my computer to 'speak' to the newcomer and ignore the old one?  BT still think it may be a fault on the line, but my phone is working perfectly well on that line. They're coming tomorrow and, from past, experience, I know that it's £114  for them to just ring the doorbell Angry

All help gratefully received.

I'm not a boffin but the answer is no. I use BT wireless broadband and the installation CD they provide takes care of all that for you. I had teething problems with them but since then it's worked with no problems for about a year now.

I know someone who is having awful problems with Tiscali broadband. No one can get it to work for him. He's now refusing to pay them, they say it's not their fault and he must pay, etc, etc.

Thanks for responding, Tony.  What were your teething problems? I may need all the pointers that I can get.

After a few days, the service broke down. Someone I know who works for BT told me that when they connect you, it involves soldering a connection somewhere at their end and that solder can fall off! The Mac connected no problem but for the Windows XP machine, I used a Belkin thing. The Belkin software that came with it does not get on very well with Windows XP as they both compete for control, meaning that you have to reinstall the Belkin stuff. BT solved it by taking control of my computer and messing about with the insides - they can do that from India while you just sit and watch your screen - but you might need an ethernet cable connection if the wireless is not working.

Now hang on, this is ringing a bell.
I had to uninstall my old modem software before my computer was happy with the wireless connection. I have no idea whether that would be the same for you, but I figured that I had the discs to install the modem software again, even though I thought that it was unlikely I'd need it again so I just went for it and haven't had a problem since.

A couple of other tips Mort - even with a cable modem various things can interfere with the signal that goes down the wires. In particular: power cables, lights with dimmer switches, computers (!). So try to arrange your modem so it's a few feet away from your desk, and that any ethernet cables aren't running alongside power cables. Inevitably this will be a bit tricky to arrange, but I had connection issues with my BT broadband recently and this did the trick.

The BT engineer (looking about 12) arrived and got my BB connection sorted out. Hooray! He obviously didn't know anything about BB but he tweaked the phone cables and here I am.  However in the process I have lost all my bookmarks. Every last one of them! Bugler bugler  Cry Cry  Does anyone know of a way of recovering them, or do I have to start from scratch?

Thanks for the advice trj. So much for wire-less, eh? I've got more now than I had before Roll Eyes

Mort, as I remember you are using Firefox so you could try having a look at this on how to recover bookmarks

Help may also be in here, Mort:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000524.htm

And if you're using Firefox, this might be a useful thing to protect against future worries:

(I'm too disorganised for bookmarks myself. Should get into the habit though.)
