Why is there this relentless pressure to buy the latest version all the time? Come come hh, are you seriously asking that? why can't everything be nice? i thought that macs were supposed to be user-friendly [snivel] [sniff]

I've now set up my old desktop as a dual boot machine. When I switch on I can choose between: Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake [This means that I have a choice of which Linux operating system to run] I know there are a couple of penguin enthusiasts here so I hope the above means something to at least one person.

They are, hh, but there comes a time when the architecture of the operating system can no longer be upgraded as such, and a new start is necessary. Third party software engineered and issued thereafter will naturally take advantage of the revised abilities....

Oh come on! That's a sensible answer! That doesn't help my RAGE. I'll make enquiries through work. Their support for Macs using MS Office is truly awful (Office 2001 i.e. pre-OSX) but maybe, just maybe... [optimistic smiley]

You could always try Linux since no-one's ever accused it of being user-friendly, so you won't be disappointed.

using MS Office Well, there's your problem Sigh. I know. Is it Open Office that you use? Do you have any compatibility problems with MS Office? I only ask because that would be the major bane of my life if there are. Hey hh, the latest Realplayer is now v.11
...which only works with Mac OSX 10.4 and higher as per my earlier post. Not a Mac but last year I downloaded v.10 Basic onto my new laptop for free, BBC iPlayer runs OK
Well for some reason, v 10 doesn't work for me. It says that I need plugins (Real Player 10.5) which are, of course, unavailable.

Aha! Just got it to work by making sure that my copy of RealONE Player was in the right directory (and no, I have no idea why that works and nothing else does). The interface is really difficult to operate but at least it plays now. Saved again.

I only ask because that would be the major bane of my life if there are. Yes I use OpenOffice. Don't know how it works with Macs obviously but on a PC it seems to work fine ie I can open .doc files and save them as .docs again or as .odts (OpenOffice format) or .pdfs. There probably are some compatibility problems, depending on what you do, but I haven't met them yet. MS are using a more OpenOffice type of format in the latest version of Office but I don't know anyone who's stupid enough to buy it so I haven't had a chance to test compatibility.

Somebody on a forum I run asked if there was a way to set up an equation renderer so that people could type in equations to their posts. Two hours later, and a good bit of frustration having been experienced, things are working, and I'm one step closer to being on talking terms with the apache webserver (I'm about as comfortable with it as some of you others are with fixing windows errors).

I was interested to see an item on the TV news earlier about the Elonex One - a £100 laptop aimed squarely at schoolkids, but it might be of interest to a few adults as well. It runs under Linux, so that's another big plus point, and it enables it to be sold so cheaply. It's got wireless internet access plus a reasonable range of applications. http://www.elonexone.co.uk/index.html

Those of you who use Spybot Search & Destroy might be interested to know that there's a new version out which gives you some resident protection called TeaTimer. I only just installed it yesterday and I'm still trying it out but one thing it does is warn you whenever anything tries to put itself in the list of programs in the registry which start automatically when you boot up. Most viruses, trojans etc do this so that they're always running in the background. In addition I've drastically chopped the list of legitimate programs which do the same thing, since most of them are not required and just slow your machine down - Spybot has a function which allows you to do this very easily. But one or two progs have the annoying habit of adding themselves back in - I'm now able automatically to stop this happening

Right. I'm not on good terms with my macbook now. I'm FED UP of leopard (the standard mac operating system). Really. I didn't see it coming, but after today's troubles (grumbled on about elsewhere) I'm fed up. I'm just in the process of burning Ubuntu to disk (fingers crossed simultaneously). GRRRRRRR.

Go for it incy! I've got dual boot Ubuntu 7.10 & Kubuntu 6.06 running on my old desktop. Admittedly I haven't had the courage to install either of them on this machine yet.
