<hairtearing emoticon> I don`t bloomin` believe it! Not only is the Virgin webmail still flat on its face, now OE inform me that my server has unexpectedly terminated my connection, so I can`t get e mail there either!  My server is, of course, bluddy Virgin! What a god almighty shambles  Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

Love Them or Hate Them?

Depends on whether they're working or not! My pc decided to die yesterday evening (thankfully, school is just a few minutes away and I have a laptop). I booted it up in the evening, opened up a document, checked the emails, went online and then......zap. I thought at first it was a power failure or a blown fuse, but no, the monitor and speakers, which are run off the same cable were still on. I suspect it's a power problem inside the pc and hope () that all my files are in tact. Am awaiting a call from Packard Bell... have a feeling it could be a long, frustrating weekend.

After nearly a week of no web mail service from Virgin Media and no indication of when it will be restored, I have thrown in the towel and slunk back to BT. The good news is that the person I spoke to a week ago gave me the wrong information (no change there then),  there will be no charge for reconnecting me because the number still exists at the exchange. I`ll be hooked up on the 20th. If Virgin Media <spitemoticon>  plan on penalising me for walking out, then they can whistle Angry  No service, no loot!  I will be penning a Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells letter of fulmination shortly ...

One word of advice, Mort, having left Virgin myself several years ago - pay close attention to your credit card/bank account (whatever you were using to pay them). In my one experience with them they were very happy to cut my service off when I asked, a little more reluctant to cancel their standing order. The magic word 'Ofcom' in the right ear got things done, eventually.

Thanks for that trj. I haven`t informed them yet. Given the level of ineptness displayed so far, I can see them disconnecting me before the due date and then I`d be in a real pickle. Not that I have blind faith in BT to ensure a smooth transfer of service Roll Eyes  I pay Virgin by Direct Debit so I am assuming, perhaps naively Huh that once I have cancelled it they won`t be able to get their paws on my ££

Mort,

Re Direct Debit, the onus is on you to cancel it with your Bank - just cancelling your contract with Virgin won't cancel the Direct Debit, you are the only one who can do it.  You can give the Bank advance notice up to one working day before it is due to be paid out I think.

Ah, quelle surprise! A slight hitch. After receiving a call from Virgin Media today expressing their deep regret that I wished to forsake them, I was rather bemused to hear that the date that BT had given them for the changeover was the 25th February, not the 20th. Hmm, best give BT a ring, I thought. I did. Just as well. Apparently BT are unable to transfer landline and BB service on the same day if cable is involved. It takes 5 working days from landline transfer. In reality this means I will be sans internet for 7 days Angry Angry because Virgin will pull the plug on the 20th . Strange the chap at BT didn`t mention that at the time, eh? However, BT will generously send me a Pay as you Go disc so that I can use dial up during the 7 BB absent days. Great Angry

A word in praise of the dongle. Earlier this evening it would have been a word in derision, but putting iot in the wrong port has got it working again. '3' is a refreshingly no-hassle service you can take anywhere, and the price isnt bad. No disc`to install for one thing-you just plug it in and your'e off.\The prob with BT in my experience is that the`phonre and net services aren't at all in sync, and the lines are forever being dug up and 'upgraded'(in the Metronet sense of the word). Good luck Mort Undecided

I've been with BT broadband for three years now (I think that's right anyway) and despite the hash they made of my move, I've been really pleased with the service that they've given me. Most of the connection problems have been down to my setup rather than any connection issues (though there were very rare outages when I was living in Durham) and once I figured them out it was quite quickly resolved. Certainly living in a capital city I have had no problems at all with my connection, so I'm still very happy to be with BT.

And they aren't paying me to say this!

Actually they aren't paying me at all.

Other way round in fact.

trj, I had quite the opposite experience with them (ntl at the time). They messed up and failed to charge me for the first six months, when I discovered this on checking my account I contacted them. They did start to charge me from then on, but were not interested in the £150 they had lost. Wink

Ok computer buffs, for a change it isn't me with the problem but a friend. Here`s the scenario -  turns on computer and gets a message asking her to 'Choose method to start'. Whichever option she chooses it says 'No signal' then goes back to the same page. She has never had this before, normally she just turns it on and that`s it. Would it help to start it in DOS? She can`t remember how. Any ideas you boffins?

Um... does she have the original installation CDs? (assuming this is not one of the newer models that come without CDs, just a recovery partition on the hard disk)

If it's a Windows PC, usually pressing the F10 key (I think) during the power-on stage will get a menu of options.
