Here`s the scenario - turns on computer and gets a message asking her to 'Choose method to start'. Whichever option she chooses it says 'No signal' Ho Mort, No Signal usually means there is something wrong with the monitor although why this would occur after the inital message, I have no idea! Sorry...

Kitty and Jonathan, thanks for those suggestions. Alas, the machine remains aloof to any F key intervention She's going to have a word with her local computer shop tomorrow. Computers eh? Can't live with 'em, can't live without.

Hurrah! My pc has been fixed!! It needed a new motherboard, as dust had caused the fan to overheat. Thankfully, no files appear to have been lost or damaged. <breathes sigh of relief>
So good not to be fiddling around on the laptop.

Thursday morning is always spent in Durham (by me at least. I think that if more of you are spending time in Durham on a Thursday morning you could at least let me know otherwise it's just plain rude). I returned last week and attempted to fire up my computer only to find that the power cable had been playing up again. I twiddled it around (as it were) with no joy (don't you just hate it when that happens? [stop it]) and moved the cable around (I had been suspecting that the problem had been a loose connection) when the little power brick thing started to spark alarmingly and then to smoke [don't even think about it]! I quickly turned it off at the wall but the base of the cable is now completely black and charred. I ran the computer for as long as I could in order to answer some reasonably urgent emails but it died shortly before midnight mid-burn of a CD that I need for Tuesday's teaching.
Thankfully, my supervisor has a spare cable that he has donated to me and I'm now back in action but I'm definitely reporting this to Apple. The cable had been plugged in all day while I had been out and I really dread to think what could have happened.

hh, shouldn't that post be on What's that burning? I went to sort out the non-functioning printer belonging to some friends a few months ago and discovered that the case of the plug-in transformer was looking decidedly melted. Fortunately it had stopped working before it could overheat too much and cause a fire. The power supplies/chargers that come with many devices are often rather cheap-looking so it might be wise to check every so often how hot they are getting when left on for a long time.

I was interested to see that Windows ME came number 4 in this list of The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time. My previous desktop, which I bought in 2001, ran under ME and I had continual problems with it crashing etc which I've never had with my current machine running under XP. I've now got rid of ME completely from that PC and am running Kubuntu (a version of Linux) on it.

I have this vague and nebulous plan that when I finally finish archiving five years of junk from my antiquated ME computer, it too will join the ranks of Penguin-Powered PCs.
I should never have been such a hoarder.

I have been meaning to introduce Penguin-Power to at least one PC here.I wonder if I will ever get round to it?

Blimey, Microsoft opens up to open source programmers! "To enhance connections with third-party products, Microsoft will publish on its Web site documentation for all application programming interfaces (APIs) and communications protocols in its high-volume products that are used by other Microsoft products. Developers do not need to take a license or pay a royalty or other fee to access this information. Open access to this documentation will ensure that third-party developers can connect to Microsoft's high-volume products just as Microsoft's other products do." The products covered are: "Windows Vista (including the .NET Framework), Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, Office 2007, Exchange Server 2007, and Office SharePoint Server 2007, and future versions of all these products." Looks encouraging, though I'm still not going to use their expensive cr@p. http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/02/21/microsoft_opens_up_to_open_source_programmers.html

I rather thought the .NET framework was notorious for its vulnerabilities. If the Open Source community can improve on it, is Frosticom going to profit before John Doe?

I just tried to use the flipping iPlayer crappy thing and it tells me that I have to download the latest version of Real player for Mac. But OF COURSE like everything else lately (e.g. Javascript) you have to have 10.4 installed. Why is there this relentless pressure to buy the latest version all the time? All I want to do is listen to the fortepiano Performance on 3. Is that too much to ask?
