I concede defeat!!!! After battling with windows media player for past couple of weeks find it impossible to play dvds without getting wretched notices about computer protection popping up about every five minutes - It appears to be a bug and once again associated with VISTA!!!! Anyway thanks to cheap dvd players i will abandon Mr Gates money making ruse and for the price of twenty pounds or so have a peaceful and less stressful life  Grin

Come on in Offbeat. There are plenty of disgruntled ex-Windows users and people like me who want to be ex-Windows users, so pull up a software package and sit down.

 Cool

Help! Help! Help! My laptop has died. I don't know how or why but it's not booting up but keeps on freezing. I'm writing this on my phone but rather concerned because I need my laptop!

It's a mac and I'm not sure that would help anyway. It sounds to me like a mechanical problem not anything to do with software. I'm writing this on my phone.

HH. You could try this but If your machine will not boot into safe mode then it will require major surgery at your nearest Apple Mac hospital ..... Sad

Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:

Be sure the computer is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

Thanks MT. It's beyond 'Safe Mode' I'm afraid.
It's time for major surgery.
I'll see what the technicians at work can do with it, and there's an Apple-approved place in Edinburgh.
It's possible that work will buy me a new one but it's rather annoying to be without it (plus I've just realised that all of the pre-comp for the current piece I'm writing isn't backed up).

I've today ordered a Dell Ubuntu laptop. I've been dithering for some time now about whether to get a Vista machine and make it dual-boot Windows/Ubuntu, but I've finally decided to go Windowsless - it does save me over £70 however since I don't have to pay for Vista.

It's going to be some time until it arrives though Sad

Dell Inspiron 1525 running under Ubuntu arrived this morning and I've been setting it up since then. It's a bit scary flying without Windows for all that I moan about it. I'm glad I've had some practice with Ubuntu on my old desktop - it meant I was able to get on-line using my USB modem fairly quickly.

Following a string of catastrophic hardware failures, I finally ditched my eight-yer-old laptop in favour of a shiney new Dell Latitude 630. Not an ultra-high-end machine but a good solid business workhorse. I've had it a couple of weeks now and I'm over the moon with the performance.

Of course, I opted for Dell's "upgrade" from Vista to XP  Cheesy

The only down side is one that I never even thought to look for in the spec -- there is no PS2 keyboard port, which means I can't use my comfortable old faithful keyboard (it's outlived two different computers and half the letters are rubbed off, but dammit I love it!). So now I'm trying to find a wireless keyboard that feels "right"... it's not easy!

We acquired an Asus EEE model yesterday. Since it is so small and light it makes reading electronic books (of which we have a great library) a delight; it comes with a PDF reader already loaded. It has three USB ports and Ethernet, and uses a form of Linux, although it is possible to remove that and install the silly "Windows" system if one wishes.

It plays music of course and can be connected to the Internet. Also it is very cheap.

All we need do now to make it perfect is to work out how to install a few additional Linux programs.
